America Split at the Seams

In this excerpt from Best of Enemies, on the eve of the first of a series of TV debates between conservative William F. Buckley and liberal Gore Vidal, we learn that for all their bitter differences, one thing both agree on is America in 1968 was severely divided. Perspective in this clip is provided by such pundits as journalist and biographer Sam Tanenhaus, Heritage Foundation historian Lee Edwards (who believes that Vidal’s main objective was to expose Buckley himself), and former NBC News president Richard Wald. We also hear Buckley and Vidal’s candid, personal thoughts as read by actors Kelsey Grammer and John Lithgow.
