In this excerpt from Best of Enemies, the ninth in a series of 1968 debates between famed intellectuals William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal became the edgiest yet. Buckley and Vidal squared off over the issue of police use of force against protesters during the Democratic Convention in Chicago. Seething with contempt for each other, they almost come to physical blows live on ABC News  — shocking America’s TV audience — as they called each other names rarely if ever heard on network television.
