This excerpt from Best of Enemies takes a closer look at Gore Vidal, iconoclastic writer and intellectual, who was picked to represent the left in debates with right-wing William F. Buckley on ABC News in 1968. Buckley’s longtime assistant Linda Bridges reveals that Buckley had only two people he’d refuse to go on TV against: a communist and Gore Vidal, whom Buckley basically saw as an evil degenerate. But others viewed the author as an important provocateur and revolutionary who wrote compellingly of the ongoing race and culture wars in the United States. Vidal here quotes Thomas Jefferson: “The tree of liberty must occasionally be watered with blood.”
