Online vs. Offline When You’re Blind

In this excerpt from the Independent Lens documentary Best and Most Beautiful Things, Michelle Smith, a precocious young woman who is legally blind, shows how  communicating in online communities, where people often don’t even know she’s blind, makes her feel more equal, but going out into the real world is a lot more stressful — as she demonstrates when having a panic attack when she briefly can’t find her favorite backpack. Michelle, who is also on the autism spectrum, lives in Maine with her mother and is trying to become more independent. She has friends both online and off, but after graduating from the famous Perkins School for the Blind, Michelle still finds venturing out in the world a challenge.
