Jackson and which was called &#8220;one of the best movies you are likely to see this year&#8221; by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/10\/movies\/a-guide-to-enjoying-the-final-stretch-of-the-new-york-film-festival.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> critic Manhola Dargis and &#8220;staggering&#8230;the year&#8217;s most essential film&#8221; by Jason Bailey in <a href=\"http:\/\/flavorwire.com\/593620\/the-fierce-urgency-of-i-am-not-your-negro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flavorwire<\/a>, <strong>will air on <em>Independent Lens<\/em> next season<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Haitian-born filmmaker Raoul Peck was awarded\u00a0Human Rights Watch&#8217;s Nestor Almendros Prize and Lifetime Achievement Award, and his film <em>Lumumba: Death of a Prophet<\/em> was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in 2002.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This makes <strong>eight\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Academy Award nominations<\/strong> for <em>Independent Lens<\/em> films:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/invisible-war\/\">The Invisible War<\/a> <\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/how-to-survive-a-plague\/\">How to Survive a Plague<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in 2013; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/hell-and-back-again\/\">Hell and Back Again<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2012);\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/waste-land\/\">Waste Land<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2011); <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/enron\/\">Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room<\/a> <\/em>(2006);\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/weatherunderground\/\">The Weather Underground<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2004); and the short documentary\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/whycantwebeafamilyagain\/\">Why Can\u2019t We Be a Family Again?<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2002).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are exceptionally proud to have funded <em>I Am Not Your Negro<\/em> four years ago when Raoul began active production on his masterpiece,&#8221; said Lois Vossen, <em>Independent Lens<\/em> Executive Producer, who worked with Peck throughout the making of his film. &#8220;He\u00a0has given us a completely original film that brings James Baldwin&#8217;s words to life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Watch the trailer for <em>I Am Not Your Negro<\/em> below, and please join us in congratulating Raoul on this amazing achievement.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oscar.go.com\/nominees\/documentary-feature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A full list of all the nominees is available here.<\/a>\u00a0We&#8217;d also like to give a shout out to director Roger Ross Williams, nominated in the same category for\u00a0<em>Life, Animated<\/em>\u00a0and whose film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/films\/god-loves-uganda\/\"><em>God Loves Uganda<\/em> aired on<em> Independent Lens<\/em> in 2014.<\/a><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I Am Not Your Negro - Official Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rNUYdgIyaPM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>The 89th Academy Awards show will be broadcast on ABC Sunday, February 26th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the nominations for the 89th Oscars and Independent Lens was thrilled to learn that\u00a0I Am Not Your Negro\u00a0[official site] received a nomination for Best Feature Documentary.
