{"id":1493,"date":"2014-12-09T08:35:30","date_gmt":"2014-12-09T16:35:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/?p=6105"},"modified":"2023-08-04T16:36:40","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T23:36:40","slug":"independent-lens-announces-winterspring-15-films","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/independent-lens-announces-winterspring-15-films\/","title":{"rendered":"A Schedule Appears: Independent Lens Announces Winter\/Spring &#8217;15 Films"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that we have a brief respite in our schedule to catch our breath, we&#8217;d like to share with you what&#8217;s coming next in this season of <em>Independent Lens<\/em>. \u00a0On the docket for <strong>January through June 2015<\/strong>:\u00a0an Oscar &#8220;shortlisted&#8221; film, several International Documentary Association Award winners, and SXSW, Sundance, and Tribeca winners, in a diverse slate of films that will take you to practically every corner of the United States, from Hawaii to the Gulf of Mexico, as well as Afghanistan, Africa, and Haiti.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The season is highlighted by a\u00a0special presentation of the three-part series <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/path-appears\/\"><em>A Path Appears<\/em><\/a>,<\/strong> from the creative team behind<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/half-the-sky\/\">\u00a0Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide<\/a>.<\/em> <strong><em>A Path Appears<\/em><\/strong> follows author\/reporters Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn and celebrity activists Malin Akerman, Mia Farrow, Ronan Farrow, Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Ashley Judd, Blake Lively, Eva Longoria, and Alfre Woodard to Colombia, Haiti, Kenya, and throughout the United States as they explore the roots of gender inequality, the devastating impact of poverty, and the ripple effects that follow \u2014 including sex trafficking, teen pregnancy, gender-based violence, and child slavery. In their travels, they meet with inspiring activists who are creating effective solutions to gender oppression, transforming lives, and providing a roadmap for sustainable future change.<\/p>\n<p>Kicking off the Winter\/Spring 2015 season is Tracy Droz Tragos and Andrew Droz Palermo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/rich-hill\/\"><strong><em>Rich Hill<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a powerful look at poverty in a small Midwestern town, followed by Darius Clark Monroe\u2019s acclaimed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/evolution-of-a-criminal\/\"><strong><em>Evolution of a Criminal<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, in which the filmmaker returns to his Texas hometown to explore what led him to rob a bank as a teenager, and Dan Krauss\u2019s harrowing war documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/kill-team\"><strong><em>The Kill Team<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of race in America is explored through the lens of a landmark 1944 Jim Crow study in Llewellyn Smith\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/american-denial\/\"><em>American Denial<\/em><\/a>, through the art of photography in the NAACP Image Award-nominated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/through-a-lens-darkly\/\"><em>Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People<\/em><\/a> by Thomas Allen Harris, and through a filmmaker\u2019s own secret family history in Lacey Schwartz\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/little-white-lie\/\"><em>Little White Lie<\/em><\/a>. Other highlights include Anne de Mare and Kirsten Kelly\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/homestretch\/\"><em>The Homestretch<\/em><\/a>, about three resilient homeless teens in Chicago, Margaret Brown\u2019s SXSW Award-winning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/great-invisible\/\"><em>The Great Invisible<\/em><\/a>, which explores the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/limited-partnership\/\"><em>Limited Partnership<\/em><\/a>, Thomas Miller and Kirk Marcolina\u2019s film about a gay couple\u2019s 40-year fight for the right to marry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom explosive conversations about race in America, to\u00a0the ongoing war in Afghanistan, to communities dealing with poverty and unrest,\u00a0our winter\/spring line-up features provocative explorations into many hot-button issues of our time,&#8221;\u00a0says <em>Independent Lens<\/em> Deputy Executive Producer Lois Vossen.\u00a0\u201cWe&#8217;ll continue to spark conversations by presenting independent voices and perspectives to help bridge gaps that threaten to divide us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monday, January 5, 2015<br \/>\n<em>Rich Hill<\/em>, by Tracy Droz Tragos &amp; Andrew Droz Palermo<br \/>\nThis Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film follows three teenage boys in small town America as they struggle with isolation, broken families, and lack of opportunity. An immersive and realistic picture of growing up poor in America.<\/p>\n<p>Monday, January 12, 2015<br \/>\n<em>Evolution of a Criminal<\/em>,\u00a0by Darius Clark Monroe<br \/>\nFilmmaker Darius Clark Monroe returns to the scene of the crime to explore what led him to rob a bank as a teenager in Texas, though interviews with family, friends, law enforcement officials, and the victims in the bank. Executive Produced by Spike Lee.<\/p>\n<p>Monday, January 19, 2015<br \/>\n<em>The Kill Team<\/em>,\u00a0by Dan Krauss<br \/>\nThis film goes behind closed doors to tell the harrowing story of a 21-year-old U.S. infantryman in Afghanistan who \u2014 with the help of his father \u2014 attempted to alert the military to heinous war crimes being committed by his platoon.<\/p>\n<p>Monday, January 26, February 2, and February 9, 2015<br \/>\n<em>A Path Appears<\/em>,\u00a0by Maro Chermayeff<br \/>\nNicholas Kristof is joined by Malin Ackerman, Mia Farrow, Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Ashley Judd, Blake Lively, Eva Longoria, and Alfre Woodard to uncover gender oppression and human rights violations in the U.S. and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Monday, February 16, 2015<br \/>\n<em>Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People<\/em>, by Thomas Allen Harris<br \/>\nThe first documentary to explore the role of photography in shaping the identity, aspirations, and social emergence of African Americans from slavery to the present, <em>Through a Lens Darkly<\/em> probes the recesses of American history through images that have been suppressed, forgotten, and lost.<\/p>\n<p>Monday, February 23, 2015<br \/>\n<em>American Denial<\/em>, by Llewellyn Smith<br \/>\nUsing the story of Gunnar Myrdal\u2019s 1944 investigation of Jim Crow racism as a springboard, this film explores the power of unconscious biases and how the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice still impact notions of race and class today.<\/p>\n<p>Monday, March 23, 2015<br \/>\n<em>Little White Lie<\/em>, by Lacey Schwartz<br \/>\nFilmmaker Lacey Schwartz grew up with two loving Jewish parents.
