{"id":14964,"date":"2017-03-27T09:05:10","date_gmt":"2017-03-27T17:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/?post_type=blog&#038;p=14964"},"modified":"2023-08-29T16:09:30","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T23:09:30","slug":"girl-power-original-squadgoals","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/girl-power-original-squadgoals\/","title":{"rendered":"Girl Power: The Original #SquadGoals (and Just #Goals in General)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent Lens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> documentary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/ovarian-psycos\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovarian Psycos<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we&#8217;re introduced to The Ovas \u2014 a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chicanx (xicanx)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feminist group who\u00a0bike through the streets of East L.A. in honor of sisterhood. While bike riding in solidarity is definitely an underground movement, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">womxn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coming together to uplift and empower one another has been a huge part of recent history and even pop culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, Beyonc\u00e9 asked the world a very pressing question, \u201cWho run the world?\u201d The answer was so simple and literally to the beat: Girls. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First-Wave feminism had The Suffragettes, Third-Wave feminism has Beyonc\u00e9. Chants and picket signs on women\u2019s rights turned into pop songs about and magazine covers embodying \u201cGirl Power.\u201d I wasn\u2019t the most popular kid in elementary school, but who needed friends when you had The Spice Girls, TLC, Destiny\u2019s Child (who had Beyonc\u00e9), and The Powerpuff Girls. Memorizing the ingredients Professor Utonium used to create \u201cthe perfect little girl\u201d along with the lyrics to \u201cNo Scrubs\u201d was pretty much my Feminism 101 when I just barely learned how to spell the number seventy-eight.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are definitely ~78+ groups consisting of amazing SHEroes, here\u2019s a brief timeline of Third-Wave feminism\u2019s influence on pop culture girl groups and vice versa,\u00a0because #KnowYourRoots:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Riot grrrls: 1990s<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1991, a group of womxn in Washington just wanted to rock n\u2019 roll. To stand up against the sexist, misogynistic views of the punk scene, they literally \u201cstarted a riot,\u201d and thus dubbed themselves <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riot grrrls<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Riot grrrl family included bands such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikini Kill<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bratmobile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleater-Kinney<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Le Tigre, Pussy Riot, as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">queercore<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> groups like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team Dresch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Third Sex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin\u2019s 2013 film <em>Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer<\/em>\u00a0delivers an 88-minute snippet on one of the most prominent and present bands in the Riot grrrls movement, Russia&#8217;s feminist collective (and censored and jailed by the Putin regime), Pussy Riot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Spice Girls: 1996<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends. If you wanna be a feminist, you have to know the Spice Girls a.k.a. the founders of Girl Power and the reason why I to this day still pose with the peace sign. Leave it to Sporty, Baby, Posh, Scary, and Ginger Spice to let you know that nothing lasts forever and friendship never ends. <\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spice Girls - Wannabe (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gJLIiF15wjQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zigga zig ah!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Powerpuff Girls: 1998<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You had tomboy Buttercup, cute and sweet Bubbles, and the beautifully brilliant Blossom \u2014 all three totally different but equally rad girls kicking some major butt and schooling the haters on equal rights. There is an entire episode literally titled, \u201cEqual Rights,\u201d and this episode taught lil\u2019 me who Susan B. Anthony was.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Powerpuff Girls | Super Sick | Cartoon Network\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BuwG63Y6Glk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b>TLC<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The band was birthed in 1991 but it was their 1999 album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FanMail<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that made 7-year-old me realize I\u2019m a strong, independent woman who don\u2019t need no man. \u201cNo Scrubs\u201d is the no-brainer hit single from that album but the lyrics of \u201cUnpretty\u201d really opened my eyes to the cruel standards and expectations of American beauty and that looking good isn\u2019t nearly as great as feeling good. Just listening to T-Boz, Chilli, and Left-Eye (#RIP) harmonize makes me want to hug every womxn who passes by me and tell them they\u2019re beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TLC - Unpretty (Official HD Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g2gy1Evb1Kg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<blockquote><p><em>Never insecure until I met you<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Now I&#8217;m bein&#8217; stupid<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I used to be so cute to me<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Just a little bit skinny<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Why do I look to all these things<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To keep you happy<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Maybe get rid of you<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And then I&#8217;ll get back to me<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Destiny\u2019s Child: 2001-Beyonc\u00e9-infinity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>Survivor<\/em> album made me feel invincible and had 9-year-old me almost pretty excited to have my heart broken before I even knew what dating was, just so I could sing \u201cSurvivor,\u201d \u201cIndependent Women I,\u201d and \u201cIndependent Women II.\u201d Yea, \u201cIndependent Women I\u201d was so liberating that Destiny\u2019s Child knew they had to make a second version. I\u2019d also say Beyonc\u00e9 took a bold move making a third version, by making her own entire album. In 2014, the iconic image of her ascending onto the stage with a backdrop saying \u201cFEMINIST\u201d (yes in all caps) at the VMAs became almost everyone\u2019s Facebook cover photo, Twitter header, and phone backdrop. (I say &#8220;everyone&#8221; so I don\u2019t feel so alone).<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beyonc\u00e9 - ***Flawless ft.
