The voting period will run through <strong>5 pm PT Friday, July\u00a021<\/strong>. This year&#8217;s voting was quite close, and we salute all the films, all deserving in our estimation. But <em>They Call Us Monsters<\/em> came out on top this year, and we salute them.<\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s Audience Award winner was\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/films\/trapped\/\"><strong>Trapped<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, directed by Dawn Porter,\u00a0which also went on to win a Peabody Award.
