{"id":16674,"date":"2018-03-13T07:49:01","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T15:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/?post_type=blog&#038;p=16674"},"modified":"2023-08-25T10:02:14","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T17:02:14","slug":"peter-bratt-feels-the-calling-to-tell-dolores-huertas-story","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/peter-bratt-feels-the-calling-to-tell-dolores-huertas-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Bratt Feels the Calling to Tell Dolores Huerta&#8217;s Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Filmmaker <b>Peter Bratt<\/b>&#8216;s\u00a0first feature\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/reviews\/follow-me-home-1998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Follow Me Home<\/i><\/a>, a San Francisco International Film Festival Audience Award winner, was produced with his brother <strong>Benjamin Bratt<\/strong>, which they followed with the heartfelt indie film\u00a0<i>La Mission<\/i>, shot on location in their hometown of San Francisco,\u00a0 &#8220;an honest attempt to portray the destructiveness of violence in the Latino community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This powerful survey of an underappreciated figure in the labor and Latino rights movements is &#8220;a fascinating corrective to 50-plus years of American history,&#8221; writes Lora Grady in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/goingoutguide\/movies\/dolores-a-stirring-portrait-of-a-social-justice-pioneer\/2017\/09\/14\/6eccb68c-93fa-11e7-8754-d478688d23b4_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;It\u2019s educational, to be sure, but also exhilarating, inspiring and deeply emotional.&#8221; Adds David Hughes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/reviews\/dolores-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Empire<\/em> magazine<\/a>, &#8220;It&#8217;s powerful, provocative filmmaking that could potentially inspire a new generation of Dolores Huertas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bratt, a San Francisco Film Commissioner and a longtime consultant for the Friendship House Association of American Indians, stopped by to talk about how he became hooked on Huerta&#8217;s story and how he earned the trust of both Dolores and her family.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>Why did you make this film?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was Carlos Santana\u2019s idea. He wanted the world to know about her work, and so he reached out to me, expressing that he wanted to collaborate. As an indigenous person, I\u2019ve always been drawn to the idea of who controls our collective narrative and which stories get told. \u00a0After a year of research, it became apparent that Dolores had been purposefully left out of the history books \u2013 and I was hooked. Getting her story out to the world felt like a calling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b> \u00a0<\/b><b>What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in making this film?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming from a narrative feature film background, it took much more time to find the story and themes. After about a year and a half of interviews and combing through hundreds of hours of archives, a light went on, and suddenly the narrative structure emerged. It was literally like a lightning strike. But up until then, I was sweating bullets. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other big challenge was that Dolores<em>\u2014<\/em>like most activists<em>\u2014<\/em> resisted the story being about her. I think she envisioned more of an \u201corganizing 101.\u201d I don\u2019t think she understood, that the organizing would be transmitted through her personal story. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How did you gain the trust of the subjects in your film? <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trust came with time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understandably Dolores and her family were a bit guarded about sharing their personal stories and souls to a group of strangers camped out in their living room. But after interviewing them, breaking bread with them, and sometimes crying with them, the trust began to grow. After the second year, we<em>\u2014<\/em>the entire crew<em>\u2014<\/em>were adopted as part of the family. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What would you have liked to include in your film that didn\u2019t make the cut? <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dolores started advocating for LGBTQ rights nearly five decades ago, and even helped get Harvey Milk elected to the SF Board of Supes. Because of the fierce homophobia in Latino communities, this was a radical thing for a Latina to do back then. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But her work with Harvey was only the tip of the iceberg, and her work for LGBTQ rights continues to this day. So yes<em>\u2014<\/em>that\u2019s my biggest disappointment as a filmmaker<em>\u2014<\/em>that we weren\u2019t able to include that important aspect of her work. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dolores Trailer | Independent Lens | PBS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/74KN-FCvwZM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b>Do you have a scene in your film that is especially a favorite or made the most impact on you?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love the part of \u00a0about Dolores\u2019 relationship with Robert F. Kennedy as well as the birth of &#8220;brown pride.&#8221; Our editor and my co-writer, Jessica Congdon, did something magical in those two sections. I never tire of watching them. All the elements of filmmaking seem to be hitting on all six, working in beautiful harmony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are your three favorite\/most influential documentaries or feature films? <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have favorite scenes more than whole films. Some of the most powerful scenes though appear in <em>Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter\u2026and Spring<\/em>\u00a0(Korean feature), <em>Born into Brothels<\/em> (feature doc), <em>Little Big Man<\/em>
