\nThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the nominations for the <\/span>91st Oscars<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Independent Lens<\/span><\/i> was elated that <\/span>Hale County This Morning, This Evening<\/i><\/strong><\/a> received a nomination for <\/span>Best Feature Documentary<\/b>. <\/span>RaMell Ross<\/b>‘s critically acclaimed film, “made modestly and intimately,” wrote Richard Brody in The New Yorker<\/em>, the film “embodies a vast conceptual and aesthetic ambition.” <\/span>Hale County<\/span><\/i>, remarkably Ross’s feature debut, <\/span>will air on <\/b>Independent Lens <\/i><\/b>on PBS February 11<\/b>. \u00a0The film was also a Special Jury Award winner at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. The Oscar ceremony will be held\u00a0Sunday, February 24, airing on ABC.<\/span><\/p>\n Currently a faculty professor at Brown University, Ross is also an internationally exhibited photographer, a Sundance Art of Nonfiction Fellow, and was part of <\/span>Filmmaker Magazine\u2019s<\/span><\/i> \u201c25 New Faces of Independent Film\u201d in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n This makes <\/span>nine Academy Award nominations<\/b> for <\/span>Independent Lens<\/span><\/i> films: <\/span>I Am Not Your Negro<\/span><\/i><\/a> in 2017; <\/span>The Invisible War<\/span><\/i><\/a> \u00a0and <\/span>How to Survive a Plague<\/span><\/i><\/a> in 2013; <\/span>Hell and Back Again<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2012); <\/span>Waste Land<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2011); <\/span>Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2006); <\/span>The Weather Underground<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2004); and the short documentary <\/span>Why Can\u2019t We Be a Family Again?<\/span><\/i><\/a> (2002).<\/span><\/p>\n “With remarkable access to his subjects and his unconventional style, RaMell has created a film that gently gives us the time and space needed to wash away our judgments and recognize the deeply familiar moments of ordinary life,” said Lois Vossen, Independent Lens<\/em> Executive Producer. “So much of what we see in the media is sensationalized or politicized; the love and patience in RaMell’s beautifully crafted portrait of a small town is quietly revolutionary.\u201d<\/p>\n Watch the trailer for <\/span>Hale County<\/span><\/i> below, and please join us in congratulating RaMell on this remarkable achievement. <\/span>A full list of all the nominees is available here.<\/span><\/a> We’d also like to give a shout out to first-time director Bing Liu, whose ITVS-supported film <\/span>Minding the Gap<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>also a feature film directorial\u00a0debut, received an Oscar nomination as well and will air on <\/span>POV<\/span><\/a> on PBS February 18. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
