So I\u2019m grateful that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, shows are sticking to their regimented publishing schedules, projecting normalcy in a time when few of us can recall what being normal entails. As a listener, I\u2019ve grown reliant on these strangers talking amongst themselves as a supplement for my usual social interactions and appreciate that they\u2019re commenting on \u201cthese unusual circumstances\u201d in a thoughtful, coherent way, so that all I have to do is agree rather than fumble together some profound response of my own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And for podcast creators, having the opportunity to continue doing their job has proven equally cathartic. \u201cI think there\u2019s something really comforting about still being able to be creative under such limited circumstances,\u201d said <\/span><b>Helen Hong<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the co-host of Maximum Fun\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maximumfun.org\/podcasts\/go-fact-yourself\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go Fact Yourself<\/span><\/i> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and frequent panelist on NPR\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait Wait Don\u2019t Tell Me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cYou know, I&#8217;m still able to be funny, I&#8217;m still able to be creative, and I&#8217;m literally in my closet not wearing pants, right? And thank god for that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go Fact Yourself <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait Wait Don\u2019t Tell Me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with another one of my recommendations, NPR\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/ask-me-another\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask Me Another<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are usually taped in front of a live audience, so unlike some of my other picks on this list that function just as well when recorded from a basement with the help of video conference calls as they do from a recording studio, these three had to power through a bit of an adjustment period to find the right balance of commentary and tomfoolery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After their first post-quarantine episode, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait Wait <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added canned laughter in response to listener feedback. \u201cThere were two schools of thought. Some people really enjoyed it and some people thought it was weird,\u201d said Helen. \u201cSome people were like, \u2018it kind of freaked me out, that something I turn to for comfort is so different now,\u2019 [while] some people were like, &#8216;thanks for doing it. When the program is recorded live, the unpredictability of the audience as a whole and that of the individual contestants is fuel for the hosts\u2019 repartee. But now, with only themselves and their \u201cfriendtestants,\u201d the buddies they\u2019ve called upon to fill in for traditional contestants, to use as joke fodder, the goal became less about entertaining an audience of strangers and more about entertaining each other. \u201cWe definitely got some very positive feedback from everybody who was listening, I think in part because they were just glad to hear we were still making the show, and also because they like that shift in tone,\u201d said Jonathan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Guess who plays a game on this week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NPRAskMeAnother?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@npraskmeanother<\/a>? Bowen, an SNL writer and cast member, and Matt, a comedian, TV writer, and host of Quibi\u2019s <em>Gayme Show<\/em>, talk life and culture with a special guest for nearly two hours each week, diving headfirst into the best and worst of whatever\u2019s fluttering around the zeitgeist. It\u2019s no exaggeration to say that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Las Culturistas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has gotten me through some hard times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/LasCulturistas\/status\/1428162462453436417?s=20<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earwolf.com\/show\/urgent-care-with-joel-kim-booster-and-mitra-jouhari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Urgent Care<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tackling all of life\u2019s questions that you\u2019d rather not ask a licensed professional, comedians Joel Kim Booster and Mitra Jouhari spend an hour a week responding to listener voicemails and emails about the problems weighing on people\u2019s minds. In keeping with our times, his episodes have recently included quarantine sex stories and listener queries on how to stay safe and sexy during a pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/myfavoritemurder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>My Favorite Murder<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining true crime and comedy, hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark regale each other and their audience with stories of real murders. Unlike other true crime podcasts that focus on the drama and the journalism, My Favorite Murder is a reflection of the hosts\u2019 fascination and obsession with the truly gory and hearing their excitement and horror as they learn more about a terrifying deed is a truly joyful, not to mention distracting, experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"My Favorite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark #59 - serial ki*ler The Giggler\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DU5BComwkfs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/510317\/its-been-a-minute-with-sam-sanders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It\u2019s Been a Minute<\/a>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes real skill to turn a podcast about the week\u2019s news into something that\u2019s not just tolerable, but also enjoyable. Yet <\/span><b>Sam Sanders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has figured out the formula for distilling seven days&#8217; worth of chaos into easy listening. In addition to his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/510317\/its-been-a-minute-with-sam-sanders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friday Weekly Wraps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he also posts full-length interviews with special guests ranging from novelists to fellow journalists to actors, musicians, and everyone in between.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/armchairexpertpod.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On most occasions, I\u2019d be reluctant to recommend a podcast that frequently strays north of 2 hours long, but given that most of us are stuck at home, now seems like the perfect time to tuck into a lengthier production. Hosted by multi-hyphenates <strong>Dax Shepard<\/strong> and <strong>Monica Padman,<\/strong> Armchair Expert is part free-rolling conversation part interview. Every guest, whether an academic, a doctor, a comedian, or a former FBI hostage negotiator, gives Dax and Monica, and by extension, us, access to parts of themselves that most interviewers never earn.
