So big, in fact, that it dwarfs both the film and music industry <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Gaming as a hobby has become much more popular every year since the 1990s, after Nintendo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.com\/super-mario-saved-american-video-game-industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paved the way<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with their seminal game <em>Super Mario Bros<\/em>. for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and later with the Gameboy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some may be surprised to learn that the most-active gameplaying demographic is African American teenagers: A 2015 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2015\/08\/06\/chapter-3-video-games-are-key-elements-in-friendships-for-many-boys\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that <strong>83%<\/strong> of non-Hispanic Black teenagers play video games, compared to 71% of Caucasian teenagers, with 69% of Hispanic teens not too far behind. With the high percentage of teens of color playing games, representation is incredibly important but has \u2014 at least historically \u2014 been lacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s step back for a moment into that history, such as it is.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first video game featuring a Black person was <\/span><strong><i>Heavyweight Champ<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an arcade fighting game released by SEGA in 1976, then remade in 1987, and re-released again in the early &#8217;90s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/thumbs.gfycat.com\/UniformEdibleAngora-small.gif\" alt=\"SEGA Heavyweight Champ\" width=\"312\" height=\"250\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a time, some of the only places where Black characters could be found was in sports games, such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PUNCH OUT!!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, released in 1987 for the NES. Unfortunately, these characters were often cast as caricatures, with exaggerated, grotesque features, like Jim in Square\u2019s family computer game <\/span><strong><i>Tom Sawyer<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <i><a class=\"mw-redirect int-link tooltipstered\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiwand.com\/en\/UGO\">UGO<\/a><\/i> ranked as the #4 most racist video game in history.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/2\/2b\/Square_Tom_Sawyer_screenshot_blackface.png\/220px-Square_Tom_Sawyer_screenshot_blackface.png\" alt=\"NES Tom Sawyer screenshot\" width=\"425\" height=\"373\" \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Square&#039;s Tom Sawyer (\u30b9\u30af\u30a6\u30a7\u30a2\u306e\u30c8\u30e0\u30bd\u30fc\u30e4) Subbed Complete Playthrough - NintendoComplete\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pHceFHU7d3g?start=1271&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whew, talk about&#8230; problematic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As technology advanced, Black and other characters of color became more prevalent, even if most often confined to the fighting genre. And s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tereotypes were not limited to African Americans; Latinx characters have often been portrayed as gangbangers and drug dealers, as seen in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Theft Auto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> franchise, with ridiculous, cliched gang names like \u201cThe Cholos\u201d and \u201cThe Cubans,\u201d voiced in exaggerated, stereotypical Hispanic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-pJz_A71UDw&amp;ab_channel=ChristopherMorris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GTA: Vice City Stories - Cholos Quotes\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-pJz_A71UDw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Tony Montana&#8217;s vengeance story in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scarface: The World Is Yours<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not exactly a unique one, the lack of character development or sympathetic motivation in the game (based on the also arguably problematic 1983 movie in which Al Pacino plays a Cuban) implies that Latinos like Tony are inherently violent. This can lead to negative self-perception among ethnicities, and an eye-opening Pew <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/12\/17\/views-on-gaming-differ-by-race-ethnicity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that 52% of Hispanic people studied believed there was a link between violent video games and real-world violence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite many video game companies being based in East Asia, most games feature white protagonists. Asian people are heavily portrayed in fighting games, usually in a Chinese-inspired context. Regarding Asian women, they are often sexualized in \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fan_service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fan service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d games, which are characterized by their portrayal of (Asian) women in a hypersexualized manner, placing great focus on revealing clothes, large exposed breasts, and barely-there underwear that is flashed at every given opportunity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such game is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dead or Alive Xtreme 2,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a game that is disguised as a volleyball game, although it\u2019s really about playing minigames with young women whose only choice of dress is either a bikini or something extremely revealing that the player can choose for them to wear.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 Xbox 360 Trailer - E3 Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oHbTD-1dRNY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Def Jam: Fight for New York<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kimora Lee Simmons is portrayed as a prize, a trophy to be won, who is dependent on men to save her. Despite being born in the United States to Japanese and African American parents, she is defined exclusively by her desirability and proximity to Asia, even being placed in an extremely revealing kimono that is the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journal.transformativeworks.org\/index.php\/twc\/article\/view\/84\/89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western man&#8217;s wet dream embodiment of an Asian woman&#8217;s outfit.&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This poor representation of Asian women perpetuates the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stereotype<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they are meek, submissive, sexual objects who exist purely for men\u2019s entertainment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the entire roster of women is hypersexualized, Kimora\u2019s portrayal especially exemplifies the racial fetishizing that Asian women face.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Defjam - Fight For NY (Story VS Nyne) choose Girlfriend\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y5htCOKqBgE?start=92&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worse still are the portrayals of Muslim\/Arab\/Middle Eastern people, who are often relegated to the role of terrorist. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call of Duty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> franchise is one of the most popular in the world, yet it treats Muslims, Arabs, and Middle Easterners as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2016-03-24-shooting-the-arabs-how-video-games-perpetuate-muslim-stereotype.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAB9EB5vEyc_7Ln4qX96QnIDneQboqvN8Eg1jYumTAdRP6yjcz6R7VFM93GrQsY0QuA0mytgtDRwZWWmD8of5HvcG_8vk0UNHzAeC2eigKU7txNLk21Z6me1WQ34P2G5oaRlCYkKI3WQ_pHm64mevuZYxiJG7o28knro4NhlExVM7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interchangeable monolith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite being diverse groups of people. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a scene in Pakistan displays shop signs written in Arabic, even though Pakistani people speak English and Urdu, not Arabic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It sets a dangerous precedent when game developers don\u2019t do their research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native American\/Indigenous representation can be found in games like the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turok<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> franchise, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed III<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but stories unique to Indigenous peoples are still too few and far between in the AAA sphere (games produced by mid-sized or major publishers). Indigenous people often have to take matters into their own hands, with resulting products like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Rivers Were Trails<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an educational game about the effects of displacement in Native American tribes during the 1890s. (Psst, it\u2019s available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/indianlandtenure.itch.io\/when-rivers-were-trails\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the PC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for free!)<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"When Rivers Were Trails\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0Om0i4GG5vk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h2><b>Games with Better Representation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, representation has become more frequent, and more importantly, more authentic within the realm of video games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em><b>The Last of Us Part II<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sony\u2019s most recent masterpiece showcases people from all walks of life in a way that seems natural and refreshing. There are characters of Asian descent like Jesse, Lev and Yara; Dina, a Jewish woman who is Ellie\u2019s girlfriend; Isaac, an African American leader (voiced by <em>Westworld<\/em> actor Jeffrey Wright); and Manny, a Latinx member of the fictional Washington Liberation Front. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of these characters\u2019 race or ethnicity serves as an important plot point, they\u2019re all just normal people trying to survive in a mushroom zombie world. What makes representation effective is not only visibility but ensuring that characters are included without forcing them to be tied to whatever stereotypical trauma their demographic endures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of Dina\u2019s amazing strength is also her ability to be vulnerable.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"THE LAST OF US PART II [Jeffrey Wright - All Isaac Cutscenes] PS4 PRO\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ev2OhfAj0pA?start=59&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h3><em><b>Guild Wars 2<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of all the character-creation tools I\u2019ve seen in AAA games, that of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guild Wars 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the only one that made me squeal happily. Not only are there dreadlocks and braids featured that don\u2019t resemble Play-Doh spaghetti, but there are also actual hairstyles that feature locs and braids in a realistic and stylish fashion. One look at the featured hairstyles shows me that actual Black people were either consulted or respectfully observed in the customization creation process. Locs, mohawks, fades, bantu knots (!!!) are all crafted in a beautiful, and more importantly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respectful<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I teared up when I realized how well-done the customization options in <em>Guild Wars 2<\/em> were.<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/9d\/2b\/b8\/9d2bb82172e4a1a6cc211807a104a330.jpg\" alt=\"Guild Wars 2 screen shot of character representation\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/>\n<h3><em><b>The Outer Worlds<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This game was critically acclaimed for its writing, story, and environments, and for good reason. Obsidian Entertainment managed to create a living, breathing world three hundred years into the future. The player can recruit companions in their journey, which is where the game shines. Parvati, an asexual engineer of Southeast Asian descent, and Nyoka, a Black monster&#8211;hunter who is confident and assertive, are deep characters who don\u2019t feel like tokens. Each with their own struggles and flaws, they serve as well-rounded characters who showcase how this futuristic environment can shape someone into someone that isn\u2019t too different from people like us in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only did Parvati show some great representation for Southeast Asians, she also represented the LGBTQIA+ community amazingly.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Outer Worlds - How To Get Nyoka Companion Guide\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s7kWyHlPfQA?start=130&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Outer Worlds: Parvati Holcomb&#039;s Romance Dilemma\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fJrnQxGj6P8?start=39&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h3><em><b>Life Is Strange 2<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A different sort of game that reflects trauma experienced by Latinx people in modern-day America, <em>Life Is Strange 2<\/em> addresses covert racism in a way that is, unfortunately, relatable for minorities in majority-white countries. Protagonists Sean and Daniel Diaz are discriminated against because they \u201cdon\u2019t look like they\u2019re from around here\u201d and appear \u201cdirty.&#8221; They&#8217;re treated as adults deserving prosecution, instead of as children in need of aid, in times where they get into trouble. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persons who genuinely see themselves as good people end up justifying turning a blind eye to overt racism and violence directed toward the brothers, an issue that is very familiar in a \u201cpost-colonial\u201d world, and offer opportunities for difficult discussions to be started. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel and Sean are just trying to navigate a system that\u2019s failing them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sean faces Racism | All Alternatives | Life is Strange 2 Ep 4\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x354FPIRqpw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h3><b><em>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em> Franchise<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubisoft\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> franchise has dealt with a number of historical settings, which it tries to capture in a manner that is realistic and respectful to the inhabitants of the real-world countries. The first game, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, features Alta\u00efr ibn La\u2019Ahad, a Muslim born in Syria during the uprising of the Nizari Isma\u2019ilis, who is quickly adopted by their high-ranking members after his father dies. Alta\u00efr\u2019s story makes him a hero, as he rises in rank and then fails, and is given a chance to prove his worth as an assassin. It\u2019s another story that doesn\u2019t center his religion or ethnicity as the reason he\u2019s in the game, he\u2019s just a part of the world the game is set in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alta\u00efr is important as he serves as one of the few Muslim characters in AAA games that isn\u2019t characterized by stereotypes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Assassin&#039;s Creed: Revelations - Alta\u00efr Ibn-La&#039;Ahad\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tQaY2GOAVSE?start=150&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed III<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ubisoft\u2019s wishes to provide an authentic depiction of playable characters continued. Ratohnhnhak\u00e9:ton \u201cConnor\u201d Kenway is a half-Mohawk, half-English character caught up in the conflict between the Brotherhood and the Templars. He\u2019s complex as a character, questions his actions, and is so well-written that Ubisoft was praised by sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/indiancountrytoday.com\/lifestyle\/oregon-trail-to-assassin-s-creed-right-and-wrong-native-american-portrayals-in-video-games-9wZ1Q98XfU-NOYcWMyqZ5A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indian Country Today<\/a> for hiring a Mohawk consultant to ensure authenticity.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How Connor Became an Assassin, Got His Name and Outfit, All Scenes with Achilles - AC 3 REMASTERED\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eOtfu2GLCqc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h2><b>Where Do We Go From Here?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve seen how representation used to be, and how it\u2019s improved, for some demographics more than others. However, things <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be better. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubisoft did get some things right by doing their research for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed III<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, when they knew they couldn\u2019t portray characters accurately on their own, hired a Native American consultant to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oversee writing and design choices<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electronic Arts is also finally starting to listen to players and working to improve character creation tools in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sims<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to make them more realistic. The International Game Developers Association found that 81% of developers identified as White\/Caucasian and 2% identified as Black\/African-American\/African\/Afro-Caribbean. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with diverse people provides authentic results that fosters healthy attitudes towards various demographics and shows people that they are seen and respected.
