{"id":2161,"date":"2014-02-28T14:47:50","date_gmt":"2014-02-28T22:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/?p=5374"},"modified":"2023-08-15T16:03:56","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T23:03:56","slug":"favorite-oscar-nominated-documentaries","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/favorite-oscar-nominated-documentaries\/","title":{"rendered":"Some of Our Favorite Oscar-Nominated Documentaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/weatherunderground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.itvs.org\/weather_underground-01.jpg\" alt=\"The Weather Underground\" width=\"594\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Weather Underground<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>As it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/oscars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academy Award<\/a> time again, where one feature documentary out of five worthy finalists is chosen as Best, it seemed fitting to take a trip down memory lane for that Oscar category in particular.<\/p>\n<p>In honor of the fact that there have been 86 of these ceremonies now, I&#8217;ve created a few new, slightly more creative sub-categories of my own to tip the hat to past winners <i>and\u00a0<\/i> nominees. On a historical note, it&#8217;s important to note that in the early days of the Feature Documentary category there were often very few nominees (the number varied wildly even within the WWII years, from a whopping 4 winners and 25 nominees the very first year of the category, in 1942, the peak of the wartime documentary effort). A number of these films, particularly the older ones of course, aren&#8217;t especially easy to find or see, even today.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, here are my choices for some of the best&#8211;and in some cases oddest&#8211;of the best, as it were, in quirky new categories that are completely made up.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>Best Oscar Nominated Documentaries: Nostalgia Category<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/6\/69\/KonTiki.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"380\" \/>Some of these films belong in a time capsule for their historical importance (<i>Kon Tiki<\/i>), but others at least win over our hearts and minds for their almost antique charm as well as the trails they may have blazed (Disney&#8217;s cute and acute nature doc <i>The Living Desert<\/i> fits both these things).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Kon Tiki <\/em>(1950)<\/li>\n<li><em>Living Desert\u00a0<\/em>(1953)<\/li>\n<li><em>The Silent World<\/em> (1956) and <em>World Without Sun<\/em> (1963): Jacques Cousteau&#8217;s groundbreaking undersea documents; the former was co-directed by a young filmmaker named Louis Malle, who would \u00a0make a name for himself doing acclaimed feature films for decades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Best Oscar Nominated Docs: Cult Favorites<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few of the Oscar docs that were influential beyond typical and have maintained a following.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Scared Straight!\u00a0<\/em> This 1978 film won both Oscar and Emmy for its gritty-for-the-time look at juvenile criminals who are ultimately scared enough to try to get their acts together. The film spawned a sequel and the titular phrase is still used today in the world of justice and on the streets.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Hellstrom Chronicle<\/em> (1971): Still occasionally played in arthouse theaters and lava lamp-adorned living rooms worldwide, this trippy film about insects is a truly odd but fascinating combination of post-apocalyptic sci-fi, horror and nature doc<\/li>\n<li><i>Waco: The Rules of Engagement\u00a0<\/i>(1997)<\/li>\n<li><em>Bowling for Columbine<\/em> (2002)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/d\/d1\/Hellstrom_chronicle.jpg\/220px-Hellstrom_chronicle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"303\" \/>Best Oscar Nominated Docs: Back to Nature<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>March of the Penguins\u00a0<\/em>(2005)<\/li>\n<li><em>Winged Migration<\/em>\u00a0(2001): This movie is less &#8220;for the birds&#8221; than it is &#8220;with the birds,&#8221; literally it&#8217;s as close to feeling like a bird as you can get, for better and worse (those scary crabs and that poor wounded bird).[see trailer below]<\/li>\n<li><em>The Garden\u00a0<\/em>(2008)<\/li>\n<li><em>The Cove<\/em>\u00a0(2009): Not exactly a fanciful nature film, this undercover investigation into dolphin slaughter in Japan may be even more disturbing than this past year&#8217;s <em>Blackfish<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Best Oscar Nominated Docs: War What Is it Good For?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are truly too many good ones in this category to name them all but here are a few of the most important and lasting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Fog of War\u00a0<\/em>(2003)<\/li>\n<li><em>Restrepo <\/em>(2010) [Sadly, the co-director of this powerful film, photojournalist Tim Hetherington, was killed by shrapnel while covering the 2011 Libyan civil war]<\/li>\n<li><em>Hearts and Minds<\/em> (1974)<em>\u00a0<\/em>[see trailer below]<\/li>\n<li><em>Prelude to War<\/em>\u00a0(1942):<em>\u00a0<\/em>Part of Frank Capra&#8217;s &#8220;Why We Fight&#8221; series, this may seem like dated, wartime propaganda but it is historically important as a vital WWII recruiting effort and time capsule piece.<\/li>\n<li><em>No End in Sight <\/em>(2007): Undeniably powerful, enervating yet level-headed investigation into the US occupation of Iraq.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Best Oscar Nominated Docs:\u00a0Unique Characters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These folks don&#8217;t have much in common other than being frankly creepy in their own ways, but all are memorably fascinating.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Marjoe<\/em> (1972)<em>:\u00a0<\/em>You young &#8216;uns may not know of this charismatic former evangelist who changed his ways and allowed filmmakers access to his manipulative tricks of the trade.<\/li>\n<li><em>Capturing the Friedmans<\/em>\u00a0(2003)<em>:<\/em>\u00a0Fascinating \u00a0if disturbing. Roger Ebert wrote: &#8220;The film is as an instructive lesson about the elusiveness of facts, especially in a legal context. Sometimes guilt and innocence are discovered in court, but sometimes, we gather, only truths about the law are demonstrated.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><em>Hotel Terminus: Life and Times of Klaus Barbie<\/em>\u00a0(1988): Marcel Oph\u00fcls&#8217; (<em>The Sorrow and the Pity<\/em>) epic,\u00a0chilling portrayal of the former Gestapo chief, the infamous &#8220;Nazi Butcher of Lyons.&#8221; [see trailer below]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Best Oscar Nominated Docs that Rock (and Swing and Sway)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Put your stereophonic headphones and bop your head while watching and listening to these musically-inclined docs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><a title=\"Searching for Sugar Man\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Searching_for_Sugar_Man\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Searching for Sugar Man<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2012)<\/li>\n<li><i><b><\/b><\/i><i><a title=\"Buena Vista Social Club (film)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buena_Vista_Social_Club_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buena Vista Social Club<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>(1999)<\/li>\n<li><i><\/i><i><a title=\"Genghis Blues\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genghis_Blues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genghis Blues<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>(1999)<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0066580\/reference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woodstock<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1970)<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0080762\/reference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1980)<\/li>\n<li><em>Pina\u00a0<\/em>(2011): Wim Wenders&#8217; dazzling tribute to the one-of-a-kind choreographer Pina Bausch is itself one-of-a-kind, as you can see from the trailer below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Best <em>Independent Lens<\/em> Films Nominated for an Oscar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, all of them, so far.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/waste-land\/\"><em>Waste Land<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/hell-and-back-again\/\"><em>Hell and Back Again<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/itvs.org\/films\/weather-underground\/\"><em>The Weather Underground<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/enron\/\"><em>Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/invisible-war\/\"><em>Invisible War<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/how-to-survive-a-plague\/\"><em>How to Survive a Plague<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are some of your favorite Oscar-nominated\/winning documentaries over the years?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As it&#8217;s Academy Award time again, where one feature documentary out of five worthy finalists is chosen as Best, it seemed fitting to take a trip down memory lane for that Oscar category in particular.
