Assessed as a \u201chigh-risk\u201d to society by a computer algorithm, she faced the toughest of odds on her path to freedom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with the support of advocates and some unwavering determination, she broke the cycle that ensnares so many Americans in a system of mass incarceration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll the resources that helped me, I want others to have those resources too,\u201d says Myers. If they can\u2019t come up with the cash, they stay locked up until their trial or they agree to a plea bargain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myers was hired as Philadelphia\u2019s first-ever Bail Navigator for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/philadefender.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defender Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while still under court supervision. With the help of her colleagues, she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phillydefenders.org\/probation-termination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed a petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get released early from her near decade-long probation. Since her story was featured prominently in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philly D.A.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people from all over the country have reached out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s been exciting,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve had people reach out on social media asking for support and sharing their stories. I hope this film has an impact on people who are still going through this situation. I want them to know that they can make it out too\u2014they can file a petition for early release just like I did. And I want the community to see formerly incarcerated people rising as leaders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myers moved on to doing similar work at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillybailfund.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philadelphia Bail Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and started her own organization called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboveallodds.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above All Odds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which helps returning citizens address the root causes of incarceration, such as housing and financial literacy. \u201cWe\u2019re fundraising right now to get a building so the people we\u2019re bailing out have a place to go to get the support they need to be successful,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Even Have Cash Bail? | The People v. | Philly D.A. | Independent Lens | PBS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zd8KTADyegI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b>The Pandemic Increased Urgency<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic has made Myers\u2019 work all the more urgent. Some of the country\u2019s worst outbreaks of coronavirus have occurred at overcrowded jails and prisons. \u201cPeople\u2019s lives are literally at risk,\u201d she explains. \u201cWhile our communities are opening up, people who are incarcerated are still on lockdown. They\u2019re having to choose between eating a meal and taking a shower. Innocent people are having to sit in jail for months because they can\u2019t afford to purchase their freedom, or they\u2019re being forced to plea out because the courts are not doing trials during the pandemic.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even though she can now leave Philadelphia, Myers still hasn\u2019t been able to see her brother, who is incarcerated out of state, because of COVID-19 restrictions. But he was able to watch his sister in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philly D.A.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PBS is available to all inmates on prison television.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy brother was in tears when he saw it. He\u2019s so proud of me. Now he\u2019s super interested in criminal justice too,\u201d Myers shared, adding that her brother is expected home in December.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Inspiring a System to Change<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myers\u2019 outspoken advocacy has had ripple effects throughout her community. \u201cWe\u2019re understanding that we have a voice, and we have a right to advocate against systems that are harming us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;Instead of getting protected, I got prosecuted.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>LaTonya \u201cT\u201d Myers fights for probation reform and lands her dream job, but any slip-up could send her back to prison. Yet people on court supervision are still going to jail for it? Why are people getting locked up for something they can\u2019t even get arrested for? It\u2019s contradictory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myers also wants the system to stop using computer algorithms to assess an individual\u2019s risk to society. Risk assessment algorithms use data, such as a person\u2019s zip code, gender, age, and prior convictions, to predict someone\u2019s future criminal behavior. Those inputs never change, no matter how much work someone like Myers puts into their rehabilitation. \u201cStop using algorithms to tell us we are \u2018incorrigible,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cHow can you measure people\u2019s progress with an algorithm? It\u2019s coming from judges that don\u2019t want to let go of their power trip. They think, \u2018If I\u2019m locking people up, I\u2019m doing good.\u2019 But judges shouldn\u2019t measure their success on other people\u2019s failures, especially if they\u2019re not trying to help them succeed.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I came home, I put my heart and soul into advocating,\u201d says Myers. \u201cI\u2019m trying to add more self-care and make sure I\u2019m having fun along the way. I\u2019m in this for the long haul.\u201d She\u2019s working on a bucket list she drafted when she was incarcerated. \u201cI want to do some traveling and see California. I want to try surfing, white water rafting, and zip-lining.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to re-learn how to be free,\u201d says Myers. \u201cYou can be physically free, but psychologically, you have to learn that you don\u2019t have to ask anyone\u2019s permission to live your life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><b>Renee Gasch <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a freelance writer and activist based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
