We’re excited to officially announce the Independent Lens<\/em> Winter\/Spring 2014 lineup, the second half of our current season, presenting a varied selection of independent docs from both first-time filmmakers and familiar names like\u00a0Frederick Wiseman<\/a> and Bill Siegel<\/a>.\u00a0Premieres range from Spies of Mississippi<\/i><\/a>, a look back at a shocking, little-known chapter of civil rights history, to behind-the-ball gown peek at an extraordinary debutante tradition in Laredo, Texas (Las Marthas<\/i><\/a>), from a fascinating look at the infamous Jayson Blair scandal<\/a> which shook journalism to its core, to a rocking tribute to the powerful sound of the musical mecca of Muscle Shoals, Alabama.<\/p>\n

“What strikes me most about our winter and spring line-up is the sheer range these award-winning films cover,” said Independent Lens<\/em>\u00a0senior series producer Lois Vossen. “We’re eager to share these provocative films that move you with people’s stories, with music, with our complex living history.”<\/p>\n

\nLegendary documentarian Frederick Wiseman goes back to school for this intimate and sprawling film about the University of California at Berkeley. Eschewing narration and standard interviews, the film takes viewers from faculty meetings to classrooms, from financial aid seminars to research labs, to show the myriad aspects of university life.<\/p>\n

From Blood Brother<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Blood Brother<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0by Steve Hoover
\nMonday, January 20, 2014, 10:00-11:30PM ET
\nWhy would someone leave everything behind to devote their life to helping others? Director Steve Hoover explores that question in Blood Brother, the remarkable story of his long-time friend Rocky Braat, who did exactly that. A young man from a fractured family and a troubled past, Braat went traveling through India without a plan. There he met a group of HIV-positive children living in an orphanage \u2014 a meeting that changed everything for him. Spies of Mississippi<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, by Dawn Porter

\nThe inside story of the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission, a secret agency created by the state in the 1950s to spy on its own citizens and maintain segregation. To accomplish its goals the Commission used investigators and informants \u2014 including African Americans \u2014 to infiltrate civil rights groups. Over time it evolved from a propaganda machine to become the hidden hand of the state\u2019s power structure, coordinating state police, county sheriffs, state courts, and private citizens groups to protect white supremacy \u2014 at any cost.<\/p>\n
