Simultaneously,\u00a0the screening will be played to a live audience in St. Louis where the evening&#8217;s host, Nine Network, is based. Those away from their computer can join via Twitter, asking questions of the panel and offering their opinions about the trajectory of hip-hop and the evolution of education using the hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23HipHopEd&amp;src=hash\" target=\"_blank\">#HipHopEd<\/a>. Join the conversation\u00a0Tuesday\u00a0night and leave your headphones at home\u00a0\u2014\u00a0you&#8217;ll want to turn the volume up.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>More about the panel:<\/p>\n<p>Hip-hop will revolutionize education. So goes the ethos of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisemdin.com\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Chris Emdin<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>of Columbia University&#8217;s Teachers College, who is challenging traditional teaching structures by introducing hip-hop into classrooms across New York City, and eventually, across the country. More than simply talking about the cultural influence of the genre on society or analyzing the lyrics, Dr. Emdin uses pedagogical techniques inspired by rap battles to empower students to discover new thoughts, compose them artistically, and teach their peers. His Science Genius program focuses on teaching students in inner city schools to learn hard sciences through what he likes to call\u00a0<i>Hip-Hop Pedagogy.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Byron Hurt<\/strong>\u00a0loves hip-hop. His award-winning film,\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/hiphop\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes<\/a>,<\/i>\u00a0which aired on\u00a0<em>Independent Lens<\/em>, applied a thoughtful critique of the art&#8217;s darker edges\u00a0\u2014\u00a0from misogyny, the celebration of violence, and homophobia. As he wrote: &#8220;Hip-hop is a man&#8217;s game, but does it have to be?&#8221;<i>\u00a0<\/i>In taking a critical eye to hip-hop and scoring interviews with legends\u00a0Chuck-D,\u00a0Mos Def,\u00a0Talib Kweli,\u00a0and\u00a0Busta Rhymes, Hunt was able to take\u00a0an in-depth look at masculinity and manhood in rap and hip-hop, where creative genius collides with misogyny, violence, and homophobia, exposing the complex intersections of culture and commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two decades, <strong>Jimmie Briggs<\/strong> has earned a reputation as a respected human rights advocate in the field of journalism, lecturer and educator.
