After 10 years of work\u2014and thanks in large part to the work of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theplace4grace.org\/programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camp Grace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a powerful California program that helps incarcerated fathers repair their relationships to their children through reconnection\u2014Sans\u00f3n was finally able to watch the film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did Sans\u00f3n think of the documentary reenactment? Sans\u00f3n talked to us about the experience of watching his life unfold on screen through re-creations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>What was the experience of watching the documentary <\/b><b><i>Sans\u00f3n and Me<\/i><\/b><b>\u00a0like?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Sans\u00f3n: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were nine prisoners, counting myself, at the screening. Camp Grace is an environment where I feel comfortable and at ease, I care about the people here a lot. They know me and I know their stories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the film started, I gave a little speech, talking about how the film started and how I got to know Rodrigo. I said I hoped they would enjoy the movie and maybe could learn something from it. At the end, everyone clapped and asked lots of questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the program leaders said to me, \u201cSans\u00f3n, your story makes you strong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What did you learn from the storytelling process?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My uncle said it in the movie: &#8220;How can you be in somebody\u2019s life and not understand their story?&#8221; And not until he worked on the movie was he able to live through it and understand me.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27798 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sanson-in-car-sansonandme.jpg\" alt=\"Sanson (the actor playing him) in a car in a recreated scene in Sanson and Me.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sanson-in-car-sansonandme.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sanson-in-car-sansonandme-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sanson-in-car-sansonandme-1280x720.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sanson-in-car-sansonandme-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sanson-in-car-sansonandme-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Did anything surprise you after seeing the finished documentary? After all, 10 years of work are suddenly summarized in 83 minutes.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s a good point. I had imagined a three-hour story, with all the details of my life. But the finished movie jumps from one main point to another, and it\u2019s because you do not have the luxury of telling every detail of how we got from point A to point B, and on to point C.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I thought it would be just a story, like the other documentaries I have watched. But I\u2019ve never seen anything like it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How did you feel having your family participate in the making of this film?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think it was good that my family acted in the movie. I was very happy to see them. While I know their situation and it is not new to me, it is more meaningful that my own family reconstructed my story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I thought about this as we were making the movie and hoped that in the future, when they can see it, they can learn something from it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"related-link\"><a class=\"related-link__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/from-crimmigration-court-interpreter-to-lifelong-friends\/\"><div class=\"related-link__subhead\">Related<\/div><div class=\"related-link__title\">From Crimmigration Court Reporter to Lifelong Friends<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Are there any scenes that stood out for you when watching it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That scene when I am sleeping on my parents grave and my mom and dad show up. I almost cried then. The truth is that I did cry, why should I lie about it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the scene with my dad\u2019s funeral, when he is in his coffin. I felt like I was there, walking through the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I loved the scene with my son, when I see him lying in bed as a baby, before going to work. Everyone in the audience at Camp Grace loved that, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actor who plays me as an adult, Gerardo\u2014well, the audience agreed that we don\u2019t look alike. But he is educated, reserved, and has a low voice, just like me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>And what was it like seeing the places where you grew up?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I relived my childhood memories, when you are carefree. You can remember nice things but also ugly ones\u2014[but] not everything was terrible. But I missed more things from his side, to round out his portrait a little more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I imagine that when Rodrigo was curious to know about the life of Sans\u00f3n, he was not trying to exploit that person, he wanted to know more about what happened. He did not see Sans\u00f3n as just a person who committed a crime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one was forced into this. I knew what it was all about, and it helped to heal and make this big thing, and also help my family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A friend is not made with just the good times. You need the bad ones to show you if it can keep going.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What do you hope viewers take from the film <\/b><b><i>Sans\u00f3n and Me<\/i><\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually hope viewers see the reality of this process, that anyone can have a hard life, but I believe this should not define who you are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I made this story, with Rodrigo\u2019s help, so it can fly across the world like a little bird, just like it says in the movie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3082344237\/\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><b>How are you doing<\/b> <b>now?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am doing real good, I am blessed.
