It could be a pop culture reference, like Father Mulcahy in<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> M*A*S*H*<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or prison chaplains in a movie with a death row setting,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or perhaps something from history, like the famed &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Four_Chaplains\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four Chaplains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; from WWII. But what actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a chaplain, and what are the different types of chaplains represented in the military? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chaplains are usually attached to an otherwise secular institution, like a hospital, the U.S. Senate, or, say, the military. As Hans Zeiger wrote for Pepperdine&#8217;s School of Public Policy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicpolicy.pepperdine.edu\/academics\/research\/policy-review\/2009v2\/why-does-us-military-have-chaplains.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no office in America is so delicately balanced between church and state as that of the military chaplain.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A big part of a chaplain&#8217;s job is to be there to listen without judging, no matter who they are talking to, making them the de facto spiritual leaders inside the organization. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Active duty service members don\u2019t only go to chaplains for religious reasons, but faith\u2014any faith\u2014 is a way for those serving to endure the challenges of the military experience. Beyond performing religious rites and conducting worship services, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militaryonesource.mil\/relationships\/married-domestic-partner\/the-unit-chaplain-roles-and-responsibilities\/#:~:text=The%20chaplain's%20responsibilities%20include%20performing,military%20members%2C%20including%20combat%20environments.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chaplains provide confidential counseling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/23\/Four_Chaplains_stamp1.png\" alt=\"1948 stamps issue of en:Four Chaplains who sacrificed their lives in the sinking of the S. Public domain (U.S. Post Office)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Soldiers and cadets of all faiths and some with no faith come and talk to me,&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/191527\/jewish_chaplain_cares_about_soldiers_and_cadets_of_all_faiths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain David Ruderman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Jewish chaplain at West Point. Echoing that experience, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retired Lieutenant Colonel Chaplain Abdul-Rasheed Muhammad says that &#8220;oftentimes, people who are not of our profession think that [miltary personnel] only come to us for religious reasons [but] people come to us with the things that normally burden their souls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each squadron is supposed to have a chaplain who, regardless of their personal religious affiliation, serves the spiritual needs of all the members in that group. Per the official directive, the chaplain must \u201cprotect and promote the free exercise of religion for all faith groups [inside the military]\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"related-link\"><a class=\"related-link__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/following-the-journey-of-interpreters-we-left-behind\/\"><div class=\"related-link__subhead\">Related<\/div><div class=\"related-link__title\">Following the Journey of Interpreters We Left Behind<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chaplaincy is not merely about religious instruction,&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chaplain Saleha Jabeen, pictured at top right, adds.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;It is about being better at being human. In a military environment, such a presence serves as a moral compass that the senior-most members are in need of as much as the junior member needs it, to remain resilient, to serve the nation with integrity, and to care for their fellow service member with complete dignity and respect.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her experience with military members in crisis has led her to confirm that \u201c[the] reality is people have the courage it takes to battle through negative force and stay alive regardless of the intensity of it. They just need someone to hold their pain while they try to catch a breath,\u201d further cementing the importance of this position.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How religiously diverse is the military?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Religion and culture outpace politics across all regions surveyed as the root cause of tension between Muslim and Western worlds,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/157082\/islamophobia-understanding-anti-muslim-sentiment-west.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Gallup Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An estimated 5,000 to 6,000 U.S. military members practice Islam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Captain Chaplain Rafael Lantigua, there was never doubt about expecting some level of hostility for being a Muslim because, as he states in the documentary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/three-chaplains\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three Chaplains<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cJust because of the nature of what\u2019s going on in the world, the news footage continues to propagate this idea that Muslims are terrorists\u2026\u201d Despite that expectation, a poll from 2022 showed an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/09\/21\/muslim-americans-as-likely-to-join-military-as-other-groups-poll-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased willingness of Muslim Americans to serve in the U.S. military<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28019\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28019\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/RafaelLantigua-ThreeChaplains-1280x675.jpg\" alt=\"Rafael Lantigua at US Air Force Academy\" width=\"1280\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/RafaelLantigua-ThreeChaplains-1280x675.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/RafaelLantigua-ThreeChaplains-600x317.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/RafaelLantigua-ThreeChaplains-768x405.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/RafaelLantigua-ThreeChaplains-1536x810.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/RafaelLantigua-ThreeChaplains.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28019\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rafael Lantigua at US Air Force Academy; credit: David Washburn<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While getting exact numbers is complicated because of differing practices in record-keeping, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/militaryatheists.org\/demographics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MAAF, a &#8220;community for atheists, humanists, and other nontheists in the military&#8221;), in a 2012 survey, found that \u201cthe modern military includes over 100 religious preferences both among the general population and the chaplaincy, with the majority being Christian.\u201d This is in contrast to earlier eras, where \u201cat the outset of the chaplaincy in the 18th century and even [up to] part of the 20th century, it is fair to say military\u2026chaplains were almost uniformly Protestant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing a hundred different preferences recorded may make it look like there\u2019s thriving diversity, but in reality, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/militaryatheists.org\/news\/2012\/03\/98-christian-military-chaplaincy-reinforces-barriers-to-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the current lack of balance in religious demographics can threaten the interfaith nature of the chaplaincy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a concern from the MAAF&#8217;s perspective, as some chaplains may put their evangelization or conversion duties above their military ones, thus subverting the spirit and responsibilities of the chaplain\u2019s office. That\u2019s why they also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/militaryatheists.org\/chaplain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endorse Humanist candidates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and have cheered the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/03\/26\/no-atheistchaplains-lawmakers-tell-navy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(so far unsuccessful) attempts to address the need for non-religious chaplains in the military<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mission shared by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secular.org\/issue\/chaplain-corps-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secular Coalition for America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28004\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28004\" class=\"size-large wp-image-28004\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/First_US_Navy_Muslim_Chaplain_1920-1280x720.jpg\" alt=\"Frocking ceremony for U.S. Navy's first Muslim chaplain, when Navy (rabbi) Chaplain Arnold Resnicoff attaches new shoulder boards with Muslim Chaplain crescent insignia to uniform of Imam Monje Malak Abd al-Muta Noel Jr, 1996. According to this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanhomefront.wunc.org\/2018-05-07\/as-the-army-grows-more-diverse-it-faces-a-shortage-of-chaplains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WUNC American Homefront Project report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;The Catholic church now provides incentives for priests to join the military, such as paying for half their religious education,&#8221; adding that the Pentagon may decide to provide additional incentives of its own for chaplains of all faiths.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/to.pbs.org\/3HGYGgD\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-28252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Signup-for-the-Independent-Lens-Insider-1-1-600x45.png\" alt=\"Sign up for the Independent Lens newsletter\" width=\"1254\" height=\"94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Signup-for-the-Independent-Lens-Insider-1-1-600x45.png 600w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Signup-for-the-Independent-Lens-Insider-1-1-1280x96.png 1280w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Signup-for-the-Independent-Lens-Insider-1-1-768x58.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Signup-for-the-Independent-Lens-Insider-1-1-1536x115.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Signup-for-the-Independent-Lens-Insider-1-1-2048x154.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1254px) 100vw, 1254px\" \/><\/a>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;But the job carries unique responsibilities that don&#8217;t appeal to some faith leaders. Chaplains train with soldiers. They don\u2019t carry weapons, but they do deploy to war zones.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/americanhomefront.wunc.org\/2018-05-07\/as-the-army-grows-more-diverse-it-faces-a-shortage-of-chaplains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s a chaplain shortage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in general, the most startling numbers are those of Muslim chaplains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are approximately 3,000 chaplains currently serving in the military, but out of those, not even 20 are Muslim, for an estimated 6,000 Muslim American soldiers, or 0.3%. (Interestingly, there&#8217;s an even more striking shortage of Muslim chaplains in the U.S. prison system, according to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/07\/12\/1014823399\/muslim-chaplains-federal-prisons-islam-religion-shortage#:~:text=Hourly%20News-,In%20Federal%20Prisons%2C%20There's%20A%20Severe%20Shortage%20Of%20Muslim%20Chaplains,recent%20Department%20of%20Justice%20report.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 13 chaplains representing 11,073 Muslims serving time.)<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h6><em><strong>&#8220;We go wherever the troops are to provide religious support, to be a moral and ethical compass during dilemmas, and to serve as reminders of the sacred.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Muslim chaplain numbers are scant, on the surface it appears numbers for Jewish chaplains aren\u2019t any stronger. As of a few years ago, Ruderman was one of 11 active-duty Jewish chaplains of about 1,455 chaplains of all faiths in the Army, about 0.7%, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK547615\/#:~:text=More%20recent%20DoD%20administrative%20data,an%20Eastern%20religion%2C%200.4%20percent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Dept. of Defense data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that number is more in line with the number of active personnel who declare themselves Jewish.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.dtic.mil\/sti\/pdfs\/ADA494808.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to incentivize more chaplains to join the military ranks is making religious accommodations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including cases of those who wish to change their appearance in accordance with their religion (one member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, also known as \u201cPastafarianism,\u201d applied for a beard exemption as part of his strict devotion but was ultimately denied by the Army.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also be complicated by those who, while religious, challenge the oldest traditions of their own faiths. Such is the case of Shareda Hosein and Saleha Jabeen, both featured in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three Chaplains, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who each, during different times and with different outcomes, fought to become <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/01\/10\/airman-becomes-militarys-first-female-muslim-chaplain-candidate\/#:~:text=The%20Air%20Force%20last%20month,Force%20Chief%20of%20Chaplains%20Maj.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female Muslim chaplains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite women being forbidden from leading prayer in Islam.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3082345488\/\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A home for the religiously unaffiliated<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps surprisingly, when polling military members, recent numbers suggest \u201cNo Religious Preference&#8221; constitutes the largest single affiliation, at nearly 23%. While it includes those who identify as part of mainstream religions but nonpracticing, and those who self-define as \u201cspiritual but not religious,\u201d it also includes atheists. In fact, the Pew Research Center notes that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religion\/2021\/12\/14\/about-three-in-ten-u-s-adults-are-now-religiously-unaffiliated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cabout three-in-ten U.S. adults are now religiously unaffiliated.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAAF affirms that while there is a clear upward trend for those who would rather not be directly associated with organized religion, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/militaryatheists.org\/demographics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the stigma makes many avoid openly identifying as atheists.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But ultimately, whatever a service member&#8217;s affiliation or belief, they share similar needs for support and comfort, and at the end of the day, during times of crisis, military personnel deserve all the support they can get, not only from chaplains, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/ptsd\/mental-health-in-the-military#challenges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but also from mental health professionals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"related-link\"><a class=\"related-link__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/things-only-women-soldiers-would-know\/\"><div class=\"related-link__subhead\">Related<\/div><div class=\"related-link__title\">Things Only Women Who Served in the Military Would Understand<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As American Homefront Project&#8217;s Sarah Harris wrote, chaplains are &#8220;expected to minister to the needs of all service members, not just the ones who worship in the chaplain&#8217;s denomination.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Chaplain Lantigua told me that he would like the public to understand that chaplains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the primary advocates for religious accommodations for men and women in uniform, particularly as it pertains to grooming and attire, dietary restrictions, medical procedures and immunizations.&#8221; He adds that though military chaplains are noncombatants, &#8220;we go wherever the troops are to provide religious support, to be a moral and ethical compass during dilemmas, and to serve as reminders of the sacred.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Hear More:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NPR Morning Edition on\u00a0<em>Three Chaplains:<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NPR embedded audio player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/player\/embed\/1210826823\/1210826824\" width=\"100%\" height=\"290\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><strong>Ivonne Spinoza<\/strong>\u00a0is a South American trilingual Latina writer and illustrator.
