In the documentary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/matter-of-mind-my-parkinsons\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matter of Mind: My Parkinson&#8217;s<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he remarks, &#8220;To lose the ability to draw would be a catastrophic loss of myself in a sense.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite being diagnosed with the degenerative movement disorder, Peter continues to draw\u2014and quite successfully, thank you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former political cartoonist\u2014he drew for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anchorage Daily News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Alaska for years before moving to Washington state to be closer to better medical care\u2014Peter did contemplate whether he&#8217;d be able to continue drawing at all as the disease progressed. I tire more easily than when I was healthy. I have to tell myself, &#8220;Enough is enough,&#8221; and lay my stylus down until I am fresh again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as my style is concerned, Parkinson&#8217;s-driven ergonomic problems forced me to switch over from analog drawing to drawing with a pad on a computer running Photoshop. I never cared for computer-generated graphics with their electronic sheen and mechanical, untouched-by-human-hands appearance. But it is much friendlier ergonomically, and it solved my pain problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h6><em><strong><pullquote class='left'>&#8220;Why would you not take advantage of this new possibility for self-expression?&#8221;<\/pullquote><\/strong><\/em><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I worked to recreate my old cross-hatched pen look. When I finally did, after months of struggle, I felt a moment of triumph and then had an epiphany. I had taken a cutting-edge, 21st-century tool and turned it into something a monk would have used in the Dark Ages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I started to work with the new powers that the computer gave me to add color, sound, and motion to my work, while still maintaining my hands-on, hand-drawn look.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28504\" style=\"width: 622px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28504\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28504\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/My-Degeneration-panels-1.jpeg\" alt=\"self portrait cartoons by Peter depicting him first worrying about losing his lifetime dream of a job, being a cartoonist, now that he has Parkinson's. One nice thing about computer-based drawing is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> command. It wasn\u2019t exactly cathartic, but revisiting my past was instructive. I realized how angry I was over having this incurable, progressive, and disabling disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I discovered how confused I was in the early stages, which came as a shock to me, I thought I had everything under control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have had contact with others who tell me they have been inspired to create similar works, or who have created similar work and then discovered my book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an entire, blossoming field of comics called &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/graphicmedicine\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graphic Medicine<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; which explores the way comics can help patients and healthcare providers process what is happening to them due to illness and interaction with the healthcare system.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alaska cartoonist draws his experience with Parkinson\u2019s | INDIE ALASKA\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9gFYolKFqww?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Note: <\/strong>Peter also recently published a graphic novel on a very different topic, <\/span><\/em><strong>Nuking Alaska: Notes of an Atomic Fugitive<\/strong><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about growing up in Cold War-era Alaska.
