{"id":2961,"date":"2013-08-22T13:27:03","date_gmt":"2013-08-22T20:27:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/?p=4508"},"modified":"2023-08-02T12:49:53","modified_gmt":"2023-08-02T19:49:53","slug":"the-kill-team-picked-up-for-distribution","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/the-kill-team-picked-up-for-distribution\/","title":{"rendered":"The Kill Team Picked Up for Distribution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re excited that the <i>Independent Lens<\/i> documentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itvs.org\/films\/kill-team\"><i>The Kill Team<\/i><\/a> has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/article\/oscilloscope-acquires-rights-to-tribeca-winning-war-doc-the-kill-team\">picked up for distribution<\/a> by widely respected <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oscilloscope.net\/films\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oscilloscope Labs<\/a>, which means you&#8217;ll have the opportunity to check the film out both in theaters and on television; its <em>Independent Lens<\/em> PBS debut will be for the 2014-2015 season, while the theatrical release will be dates TBD in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The film, which was called &#8220;stunning&#8221; by <i>New York Magazine<\/i>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2013\/04\/edelstein-documentary-is-better-than-filmmaking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Edelstein<\/a> and &#8220;powerful&#8230;jaw-dropping&#8221; by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/goingoutguide\/movies\/must-see-movies-at-the-afi-docs-film-festival\/2013\/06\/12\/40819e0a-d29d-11e2-a73e-826d299ff459_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephanie Merry<\/a> in <i>The Washington Post<\/i>, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April and won the festival\u2019s Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary. It&#8217;s also played at Hot Docs, AFI Docs, and the San Francisco International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Gate Award for Bay Area Documentary Feature.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>The Kill Team<\/i> is about a young soldier in Afghanistan who attempted to alert the military to atrocities committed by U.S. soldiers, and who then himself became a target of one of the largest war crimes investigations in U.S. history. <i>The Kill Team<\/i>\u00a0offers extraordinary access to the soldiers who were convicted and the evidence used against them, in a story largely impenetrable to the media. &#8220;We are thrilled to bring <i>The Kill Team<\/i>\u00a0to theaters and to<i> Independent Lens<\/i> next year, coinciding with the official withdrawal from the longest war in U.S. history,&#8221; filmmaker Dan Krauss told us. &#8220;It&#8217;s a moment for the country \u2014 the world, even \u2014 to reflect on the price paid not just in terms of blood and treasure, but also in terms of psychological and moral injuries.&#8221; Krauss, who directed the Oscar-nominated short doc\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kevincarterfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Death of Kevin Carter<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0adds, &#8220;Our hope is that the theatrical release will make this vital story part of the national conversation and the broadcast will dramatically amplify it.
