For Some Veterans Creating Art Can Heal from Trauma"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><b>By Ivonne Spinoza<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>[Image above courtesy the artist: &#8220;Grenade Head,&#8221; by Peter J Buotte, digitally-milled aluminum, detonator fuze, 2005.]<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people may be familiar with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other common types of psychotherapy, but <\/span><b>art therapy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remains somewhat of a mystery to the general public. Not incorporating it into a treatment plan could be a huge missed opportunity for veterans who\u2019ve experienced trauma and other patients in need of mental health support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cArt is a means of therapy and a way to heal,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/eastern-colorado-health-care\/stories\/a-way-to-heal-award-winning-colorado-veteran-artist-gets-national-recognition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marine Corps veteran Jerry Rael<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt helps me escape some of the things that I went through during my time in service.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art can also be therapeutic for families who have lost a loved one in battle, as seen in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/make-peace-or-die-honor-the-fallen\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make Peace or Die: Honor the Fallen<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the film, Marine Anthony Marquez carves battlefield crosses out of wood for each lost service member and then hand-delivers them to Gold Star families, including a grieving mother who had attempted suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is art therapy and what makes it special?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIntegrating art therapy into a comprehensive treatment plan, alongside other therapies like CBT or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), allows for a more well-rounded approach to healing,&#8221; says Elvis Rosales, LCSW, clinical director at Align Recovery Centers. &#8220;It addresses not only the psychological aspects of trauma but also the emotional and even spiritual dimensions, leading to a more holistic recovery.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristie Tse, founder of Uncover Mental Health Counseling, adds that &#8220;this form of therapy [also] aids in enhancing fine motor skills and cognitive functions, which are critical post-service.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30447\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30447\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30447\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/makepeaceordie-battlefieldcross-SgtAdanGonzales-1280x720.jpg\" alt=\"Yolanda Gonzales and Adan Gonzales, Sr. holding aphoto of their son Sgt. (From <em>Make Peace or Die: Honor the Fallen.<\/em>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we don\u2019t yet fully understand why art helps us feel better and aids mental health treatments, we know that the process of creation promotes mindfulness and presence, and can even help us heal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physically<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also know that as a species our brains have shown an undeniable connection to art, and this is now being studied in the field of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/how-a-blend-of-science-and-art-is-improving-neurological-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neuroarts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Daidone, MD, FASAM, medical director at True Self Recovery, says, &#8220;Research indicates that engaging in creative pursuits can mitigate the symptoms of PTSD among veterans by providing a secure and regulated setting for reframing traumatic experiences,\u201d he says. \u201cVeterans can confront and transform upsetting memories in art therapy, gradually loosening their psychological hold.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterans using art to thrive<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet some of the veterans inspiring others with their powerful, therapeutic art:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Richard Casper<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/richardcasper.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Casper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Marine veteran who became an artist as a result of traumatic brain injuries he sustained in Iraq after surviving four different explosions from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This incident, he recalls, literally changed the way his brain works and led him to explore his artistic side. Working mostly in ceramics, he says: &#8220;I want to explain to you what losing that innocence from war <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feels<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like. When I [found] that voice through art, then I needed a purpose for that voice.&#8221; (See more in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TIME<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> documentary below.)<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"An Iraq War Veteran Finds Healing In Art | TIME\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X1pyzAUR9Ns?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h4><b>Ron Clements<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Army veteran <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/salt-lake-city-health-care\/stories\/utah-veteran-carves-art-with-an-attitude\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ron Clements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses wood carving as therapy, and his remarkable work earned him a place in the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clements uses fragments of different types of wood with varying colors and grain patterns, so his boxes look like camouflage. \u201cI use pieces because I just got the pieces of my life put back together,\u201d he says. It was when she decided to enroll in art school that she discovered just how much art can really heal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI left the Marine Corps not only with a broken body but a broken spirit,&#8221; she told us. &#8220;I moved to North Carolina and began attending art school at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CcflFGdql39\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A post shared by Jess Rambo (@the.painted.buffalo)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all that, Rambo decided that just healing herself wasn\u2019t enough and paid it forward by teaching art classes at the Servant Center. \u201cThe Servant Center is there to empower homeless and disabled veterans to become contributing members of the community using housing, health care, and restorative services to aid in the transition,\u201d she explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now a welder, painter, and builder, she founded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paintedbuffalostudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Painted Buffalo Traveling Studio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a nonprofit, veteran-artist founded and operated traveling art studio based out of a converted bus. &#8220;What I have come to realize is that life is the art of making, she added. &#8220;No matter if you\u2019re a chef, a painter, a welder, a dancer, or a mechanic. When you connect your mind and your hands through your heart, you\u2019re an artist.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Bryan Dubreuiel\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Navy veteran and painter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bryandub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryan Dubreuiel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is \u201crecognized for his approach to redefining figurative abstract art,\u201d and today has a vibrant art career with multiple art exhibits featuring his work. While serving in the Navy, Dubreuiel traveled the world and found inspiration in museums and galleries, from masterpieces by all the famous artists he had learned about at an early age. He donates a portion of his painting sales to the United States Veterans\u2019 Artists Alliance and other charities.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fbryan.dubreuiel%2Fvideos%2F1583229132269966%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<h4><b>Peter J. Buotte<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter J. Buotte is a U.S. Army veteran who not only used art to transform his life but decided to help others do the same by becoming one of the few art therapists within the U.S. Department of Defense. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/stories\/blog\/2024\/military-veteran-artist-and-art-therapist-peter-buotte-shares-significant-works-his-artist-journey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here he talks about his journey from veteran to artist to therapist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and details the origins of each of his impactful pieces. About his creation \u201cGrenade Head\u201d\u2014a striking, aluminum sculpture\u2014Buotte says:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;[It was] a visual response to my first tour in Iraq in 2003. It is also the first foray into digital art rendered from a scan of my head. Threaded on top is a detonator fuse from a training grenade. It was a challenge seeing the impact on Iraqi culture, government, economy, and families living there. This community helps prevent or counteract the feelings of loneliness that often come with experiencing trauma. \u201cBy creating a sense of community, veterans are more likely to feel understood and receive support related to them in the process of healing,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Events such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/veteran-sports\/national-veterans-creative-arts-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Veterans Creative Arts Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Indianapolis, organized by the Department of Veteran Affairs and the American Legion Auxiliary, bring together a community of veterans involved in artistic activities nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/creativets.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CreatiVets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a nonprofit organization with the \u201cmission to empower wounded veterans to heal through the arts and music.\u201d This organization is different because while most others tend to focus on tactile, visual arts, they also offer programs centered around songwriting, music, and creative writing, giving veterans a wider range of artistic expression.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CreatiVets Teaser | Official\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZspIm1qMaoY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when there are no official organizations in an area, some veterans have created their own initiatives, such as the nonprofit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nmveteransart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Mexico Veterans Art<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, run entirely by volunteers. Their art show in Albuquerque annually honors Veterans Day in November, while their summer show brings even more veterans into the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usvaa.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States Veterans\u2019 Artists Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a multidisciplinary nonprofit that seeks to provide \u201copportunities for veterans in the arts by highlighting the work of veterans in the arts, humanities, and entertainment industry along with the contributions veterans have made to the rich cultural history of our nation.\u201d They also fund artistic projects and serve as spokespersons for important issues within the veteran community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a veteran or know someone who needs help beyond traditional counseling, art therapy can change\u2014or even save\u2014lives.
