Eventually, he was deported to Mexico, away from his children. He died crossing the U.S. border to see his kids again.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI think Juan Manuel\u2019s story is common for people that come from humble families,\u201d said an attendee at Manuel\u2019s funeral in <em>The Undocumented<\/em>. \u201cThey look to improve their lives by learning. They decide to go to the United States in search of something more. Instead they find themselves dead in the desert.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Indeed, Juan Manuel is not alone. In the past decade, reinforcements to the U.S.-Mexico\u00a0border have pushed\u00a0immigrants\u00a0to the Sonoran Desert, one of the most desolate and unforgiving sections of the border. Even though attempts to cross into the United States have dropped, deaths have risen. Here is a snapshot of border-crossing by the numbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2000, the Border Patrol captured\u00a0<strong>1,636,883<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Mexican citizens<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>trying to cross\u00a0the U.S. border illegally.<\/li>\n<li>By 2012, that number had plummeted to\u00a0<strong>265,755<\/strong>. According to\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/08\/us\/us-deports-record-number-of-foreigners-in-2011.html?_r=0\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>, \u201chigh rates of unemployment here and intensified border enforcement have discouraged many migrants from Mexico and Central America from attempting illegal crossings, officials said.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>However, the number of\u00a0<strong>border-crossing deaths rose 27 percent<\/strong>\u00a0from from 375 deaths in 2011 to 477 in 2012, the\u00a0second-highest number in over a decade.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, the number of unaccompanied children crossing the border\u00a0has risen. In 2008, Border Patrol intercepted\u00a0<strong>8,041 unsupervised minors<\/strong>\u00a0of all nationalities, and by 2012, that number skyrocketed to\u00a0<strong>24,481<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1539<\/strong>: The year a Spanish explorer penned the first written record of contact with Native Americans in the Sonoran Desert.<\/li>\n<li>The Sonoran Desert spreads out over <strong>100,387 square miles<\/strong> between Arizona, California, and Mexico.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S.-Mexico border is <strong>1,954 miles long<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Desert receives as much as <strong>20 inches of yearly precipitation<\/strong> at higher elevations, but much of the low-lying landscape gets as little as <strong>3 inches<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the Sonoran Desert\u2019s extreme climate, temperatures reach as high as <strong>118\u00b0F<\/strong>.
