{"id":6675,"date":"2011-12-06T20:32:57","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T20:32:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/?p=475"},"modified":"2022-10-11T14:27:12","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T21:27:12","slug":"the-greatest-movie-montages-e2-80-94-got-a-favorite","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/the-greatest-movie-montages-e2-80-94-got-a-favorite\/","title":{"rendered":"The Greatest Movie Montages \u2014 Got a Favorite?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our good friends Kurt Norton and Paul Mariano who produced <a title=\"These Amazing Shadows\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/these-amazing-shadows\/\"><em>These Amazing Shadows<\/em><\/a> (which airs on <em>Independent Lens<\/em> on Dec. 29) have posted a really cool video on <a title=\"These Amazing Shadows Blog\" href=\"http:\/\/theseamazingshadows.blogspot.com\/2011\/12\/marvelous-montages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their blog<\/a> about the great art of the movie montage.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s apropos, since <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> described <em>These Amazing Shadows<\/em> as &#8220;film montages to end all montages.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It so happens that one of the films inducted into the National Film Registry in 2009 was <em>Precious Images<\/em> by Chuck Workman. The 8-minute experimental film features approximately 470 half-second-long splices of movie moments (and sounds) through the history of American film. And what a variety, indeed: <em>Casablanca<\/em>, <em>Blazing Saddles<\/em>, <em>Reds<\/em>, <em>All the President&#8217;s Men<\/em>, <em>Rambo<\/em>, <em>Ben-Hur<\/em> &#8230; how many can you name? (The video starts with a Spanish-language advertisement, our apologies &#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><em>Precious Images<\/em> won an Oscar, and remains the standard by which all montages are measured in the film-editing universe.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Kevin Yost, the Lucasfilm editor who appears in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/these-amazing-shadows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>These Amazing Shadows<\/em><\/a> and who sent Kurt and Paul the video, and to the editor of <em>Shadows<\/em>, Doug Blush, whose work to montage the montages is about as meta as film editing can get.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this is pretty meta, too ..<\/p>\n<p>So on the topic of fabulous film montages, what is your all-time favorite film montage? The gruesome <em>Goodfellas<\/em> execution montage? <em>Ghostbusters<\/em>&#8216;s television news montage?
