Out in the Night<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Our friends at POV<\/a><\/em> are ready to grab the baton for thought-provoking docs airing Mondays on PBS, with a new slate\u00a0of films\u00a0about extraordinarily strong and determined individuals.\u00a0The 28th season of POV begins this coming\u00a0Monday, June 22, 2015 at 10 p.m. (check local listings<\/a>) on PBS and continues through the fall. (Independent Len<\/em>s will then be back with a new season\u00a0beginning October 25.)
\n\"POV<\/a>The 15-film season launches with the ITVS-funded<\/a>\u00a0Out in the Night<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, Blair Dorosh-Walther’s\u00a0powerful documentary about four African-American lesbians who stand their ground as they face law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and media bias after being accused of gang assault. \u201cThis film could help influence the ongoing LGBT civil rights struggle. Everyone should see it,\u201d wrote Steve Boone on\u00a0RogerEbert.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s followed in the schedule with\u00a0Jesse Moss’s acclaimed, eerie,\u00a0Sundance Special Jury Prize-winning\u00a0The Overnighters<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(June 29), \u00a0which reveals the toll taken on a small town at the center of a modern-day gold rush, where thousands of workers seek a fresh start in the North Dakota oil fields.<\/p>\n

Other highlights in the POV<\/em> season include: Point and Shoot<\/a><\/em> (ITVS<\/a>),\u00a0a\u00a0Tribeca Grand Prize-winning film about Matthew VanDyke’s experiences motorcycling through the Middle East and North Africa where he ultimately ends up joining Libyan rebels;\u00a0Tough Love<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(ITVS<\/a>) by Stephanie Wang-Breal, which\u00a0chronicles the lives of two parents \u2014 one in Seattle and one in New York City \u2014 as each fights to be reunited with children taken out of their custody;\u00a0Web Junkie<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, about the internet addiction\u00a0treatment of three Chinese teenagers, obsessive gamers whose preference for the virtual world over the real one is summed up in one jarring statement: “Reality is too fake”; and the Academy Award-nominated\u00a0Cutie and the Boxer<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, a moving account of the chaotic and unconventional 40-year love affair and creative partnership between action painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife, Noriko, also an artist.<\/p>\n
