And yes, we also couldn&#8217;t resist tossing in a standard at the end, while finding\u00a0inspiration for some of the other choices via\u00a0<em>Hawaii Magazine<\/em>, <em>Honolulu Magazine<\/em>, King\u2019s Hawaiian, and our friends, readers, and viewers from Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><em>Kumu Hina<\/em> tells the captivating story of a native Hawaiian <em>mahu<\/em> (transgender) teacher who uses traditional culture to inspire a student to lead the school&#8217;s all-male hula troupe. The film reveals a side of paradise rarely seen on screen.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanying the playlist are more tracks and videos to further get you in a Hawaiian state of mind, to have your own personal <em>kanikapila<\/em> (music jam) in your home.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6842\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/hawaiianplaylist.jpg\" alt=\"Haiwaiian music playlist\" width=\"576\" height=\"288\" \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/7JK7H73c4uN3rZwLR9LkSk\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<p><strong>MORE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Israel &#8220;Iz&#8221; Kamakawiwo\u02bbole was a Hawaiian musician, entertainer, and sovereignty activist who sadly passed away in 2007 at the age of 38 from weight-related complications. But his legacy as a musician and Hawaiian independence supporter will live on.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"OFFICIAL Somewhere over the Rainbow - Israel &quot;IZ&quot; Kamakawiwo\u02bbole\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V1bFr2SWP1I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Featured prominently in the film <em>Kumu Hina<\/em> is the music of <a href=\"http:\/\/makanamusic.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Makana,<\/a> an acclaimed slack-key guitarist whose lovely work was also famously heard on the soundtrack for the film <em>The Descendants<\/em>.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I&#039;ll Remember You\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/19iQQBnmMFQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>The all-female trio Na Leo Pilimehana is a mainstay in Hawaii for over thirty years now:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Rest of Your Life\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qjiF_Q2rdK8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Not only did we forget what a sweet movie Disney&#8217;s <em>Lilo &amp; Stitch<\/em> was, but just how distinctly\u00a0Hawaiian it is through and through. The opening credits feature a lovely song called &#8220;He Mele No Lilo&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/disney.wikia.com\/wiki\/He_Mele_No_Lilo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lyrics<\/a>):<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[HD] He Mele No Lilo - Lilo and Stitch\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yIwUjrvaXjM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Here&#8217;s two mellow live performances by native Hawaiian folk-rock singer <a href=\"http:\/\/jackjohnsonmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Johnson<\/a>.
