{"id":20700,"date":"2020-07-30T11:48:28","date_gmt":"2020-07-30T18:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/?post_type=films&#038;p=20700"},"modified":"2025-04-23T13:26:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T20:26:41","slug":"women-in-blue","status":"publish","type":"films","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/women-in-blue\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in Blue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the national conversation around police reform still resonating loudly around the country, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women in Blue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shines a spotlight on the women within the Minneapolis Police Department working to reform it from the inside by fighting for gender equity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filmed from 2017 to 2020, the documentary focuses on MPD\u2019s first female and openly gay police chief, Jan\u00e9e Harteau, and three of the women in her department as they each try to redefine what it means to protect and serve. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women in Blue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> follows Harteau&#8217;s uphill battle to reform her department as the city of Minneapolis, long before an MPD officer killed George Floyd in May of 2020, grapples with a troubled history of police misconduct and racism. Her efforts involve getting rid of corrupt police officers, re-training the rest, diversifying the ranks, and, crucially: recruiting more women and promoting them into leadership at every level.
