In a celebration of urban wildness, The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill<\/i> follows formerly homeless street musician Mark Bittner into San Francisco\u2019s avian subculture, where a remarkable flock of wild green-and-red parrots live and work to survive. Dubbed the \u201cbohemian St. Francis,\u201d Bittner falls in with the flock as he searches for his path through life, unaware that the wild parrots will do more for him than eat his sunflower seeds.<\/p>\n
The film reveals moving relationships between Bittner and the birds and explores passionate dynamics among the parrots, often linking their antics to human behavior.<\/p>\n
Although he is no scientist, Bittner becomes something of an avian expert as he consults local birders and as he feeds, names, studies, and protects the cherry-headed conures \u2014 escaped pets who have begun to breed in the wilds of the city.<\/p>\n
Parrot \u201cstars\u201d include Connor, the lonely blue-crowned conure, ostracized by the cherry-heads; Picasso and Sophie, an affectionate couple who love to cuddle; Pushkin, a single father who raises three babies on his own; and Mingus, a cherry-headed conure who tries to join the flock, but, hobbled by a crippled leg, comes to live with Mark Bittner in his house instead.<\/p>\n
The film culminates with Bittner\u2019s race to save the parrots when his home (and that of some of the parrots) is threatened. Meanwhile, his own quest for survival and companionship uncannily parallels that of his birds. In the film\u2019s climactic ending Bittner does find the meaning he sought \u2014 though no one could have predicted the surprising form in which it comes.<\/p>\n

The Filmmaker<\/strong><\/p>\n Judy Irving Her documentary film career has taken her to Alaska, Japan, Russia, Nepal and Zimbabwe, with peace and the environment as her main areas of interest. Somehow, birds seem to show up in every movie. Judy\u2019s recent six-film documentary series about the San Francisco Bay Area\u2019s wildlife and open space led to her interest in the wild parrot flock flying the city’s north waterfront. \nJudy Irving, producer\/director of\u00a0The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill<\/i>, is a Sundance and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker whose previous credits include Dark Circle<\/i>, a feature documentary about the nuclear industry, and Out of the Way Caf\u00e9<\/i>, an hour-long drama. She spent childhood summers on the North Fork of Long Island, and came to love birds thanks to her grandfather. Judy graduated from Connecticut College with a degree in psychology and worked as a freelance journalist in Montreal before hitchhiking across the continent and living on a handmade raft-house in British Columbia. Later, she received her masters in film and broadcasting from Stanford University.<\/p>\n
