Arts Education...A+

Even though many people agree that arts education is a valuable thing, from my experience it's one of those aspects that many people don't believe money should be spent on. It's true that running a classroom based on arts is an expensive one, if expecting to make it the best. However, I don't think we spend enough money on all the other subjects in school, so we should put it more into something most students enjoy and can benefit out of most. I know for a fact that arts education gave me ability to understand math, science, and I even studied history when creating my art. It's all about prioritizing.--Florentina, 16, Flushing, NY

I do not think that art education should be prioritized over the standard core courses offered in high school. Although art can prove to be vital for some students, for others it is a class that is anxiety provoking and nerve racking. If a student is not confident in their creative abilities, mandating them to take art every day will not improve their skills, rather, increase resentment. The argument for greater funding for art education could be used for every other subject as well. For example, an English student would advocate greater funding for English education. It is very hard to appease everyone's needs, and by putting more money into solely art education, it is taking away from money that could be spent on other equally as important subjects. --Kristen Ruby, 16, Waccabuc, NY

I have found that depending on the income of the surrounding areas, that the more expensive and rich private schools are the more they might offer in extensive and varied forms of art classes. Because I'm in a public school, and the schools pick what I can and cannot have, I was never into painting or drawing, because when I try it doesn't look good but that's all my school ever offered. I would have liked to work with ceramics or pottery but that's more expensive. I guess I would have enjoyed my art classes more if they offered a variety. --Brittany, 17, Brooklyn, NY

Arts education is a vital part of every kids life. I think everyone deserves to know something about art, because it can lead him or her somewhere that they never dreamt of before. If it wasn't for my art education in 1stthrough 8th grade I wouldn't be able to express myself as much in high school. It helped me a lot. --Evelyn, 16, Brooklyn, NY

I don't think arts education should be mandatory. Although there are students who will benefit from learning about art and music, others (like myself) would rather sit back and watch, rather than participate. Having to take art and music classes felt like a complete waste of time, especially since I am not inclined in these areas. Although it helps some, it may be a hassle to others. --Desirée, 17, Brooklyn, NY
