Louisiana Public Broadcasting and the Council for a Better Louisiana will present a live debate for the Louisiana Senate seat on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. EDT from the Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu will face off against Republican challengers William "Bill" Cassidy and Tea Party-backed Robert Maness. In the Louisiana system, all candidates run in November, regardless of party. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, state law requires a runoff election.

Though polls currently show Landrieu leading the pack, she has not yet cleared that 50 percent threshold. As PBS NewsHour's Morning Line team has reported, neither she nor Cassidy – the more mainstream Republican candidate – seem likely to do so. Depending on other states' Election Night results, a runoff in the Bayou State could leave party control of the Senate in play through December.

That so-called "Louisiana Limbo" scenario would likely favor Cassidy, who could pick up votes that initially went to Maness. The GOP must gain six seats overall to take control of the US Senate.

So if Republicans win five seats on Election Night, and Louisiana goes into a runoff, get ready for one tense winter in Washington.

In the meantime, expect tonight's debate to reflect some of that ferocity. When Sen. Landrieu and Maness met last week, they sparred over immigration, healthcare, and the minimum wage. Cassidy declined to participate. Tonight's will be the first debate to feature all three candidates.
