Educator Voice: Suffrage and voting rights today

The ratification 19th Amendment is often cited as the moment in U.S. History that women got the right to vote — yet even today, many women in the country still don't have access to the vote. Around the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment, teachers from across the country got together to discuss the Amendment and women's suffrage in general.

They were joined by Jourdan Bennett-Begaye , Dep. Managing Editor of Indian Country Today; Mia Nagawiecki , VP of Education at the New York Historical Society; and Tory Van Voorhis , CEO of Second Avenue Learning, as well as teacher-host Sari Beth Rosenberg .

The event was part of NewsHour Classroom’s Educator Voice Zoom series and was attended by teachers and school staff from across the U.S. The series brings together educators to discuss important issues of the day and how they impact the classroom.

As with all NewsHour Classroom Zoom sessions, the educator audience played an active role in the conversation. You can watch the full session above or here , or watch selected clips below.
