The television show "American Pickers" has been enormously successful since its premiere on History in 2010. The show follows Mike Wolfe, a veteran antique hunter, as he travels and finds rare and valuable items amidst seemingly value-less junk.
The "Pick and Tell" contest allowed young "pickers" to submit their best find along with an essay about their object. The three winners won scholarships, other prizes, and a chance to meet Mike Wolfe at a recent awards ceremony at the Mansion on O in Washington, D.C. They talked with NewsHour Extra about their objects, and about why they like picking. Video produced by Allison McCartney and Lora Strum
