News Wrap: Sudan Prime Minister detained in military coup

Summary

The military in the North African nation of Sudan took power in an apparent coup, detaining (keeping someone in a place) the country's prime minister, overthrowing a governing council that included civilian leaders and cracking down on protestors. A new United Nations report revealed that emissions increased at a faster rate in 2020 than the annual average this last decade. Stocks surged on Wall Street.

Five Facts

  • Who was arrested as part of a coup (a sudden taking of power, usually by force), and in what country?
  • What new travel policy did the Biden administration announce for foreign travelers to the U.S.?
  • Where has a so-called 'bomb cyclone' ended months of drought?
  • Why are organizers of a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia being taken to court?
  • How are hackers in Russia attacking companies around the world?

Focus Questions

The head of the United Nations condemned the coup in Sudan, and the United States announced it would suspend $700 million in economic aid to the country in reaction to the coup.
