In an off-year race without any national elections but plenty of important local and state races, Republicans performed better than expected in many places. In Virginia, Republican Glenn Youngkin overtook Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the governor's race, despite Biden having won Virginia by over 10% just last year. In New York City, Democrat and former police officer and borough president Eric Adams became mayor. Progressive Michelle Wu won the race for mayor of Boston. And in Minneapolis, voters rejected a proposal to replace the city's police department.
