Student Reporting Labs: Kids in foster care become cowboys at this camp

Summary

Young people in Arizona's foster care system step out of their comfort zones, form deep friendship bonds, and have an experience that will stay with them the rest of their lives at cowboy camp. PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs produced this video during the 2022 summer academy in Phoenix, Arizona.

Five Facts

  • Where is the cowboy camp located?
  • What is the primary goal of this organization?
  • Why is going through the foster care system sometimes difficult?
  • Who is the creator of cowboy camp?
  • How does this experience create a turning point in these kids' lives?

Focus Questions

The founder interviewed in this story talks about the importance of these types of programs for kids in the foster system. What are other ways to show support for kids in the foster care system? Media Literacy : Having learned about the difficulties children in foster care can face, how can the media highlight other programs that can help? Editor's note: In the beginning of the video, the narrator refers to the kids as orphans (children whose parents are deceased) rather than foster children, which is more accurate.
