Cruz picks a running mate, Trump accuses Clinton of playing ‘woman card’

DOWNLOAD VIDEO
Essential question
Does a presidential candidate’s running mate affect a voter’s decision? Why or why not?
Fresh off primary wins in five states on Tuesday, Donald Trump made a speech on foreign policy Wednesday and also accused Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton of playing the “woman’s card.” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz attempted to make his own headlines by announcing his choice of Carly Fiorina as his vice presidential running mate. Fiorina dropped out of the Republican race in February after an unsuccessful showing in early primaries. Cruz’s announcement came less than a week before the Indiana primary. With Trump now in possession of three-quarters of the delegates needed to win the nomination, Cruz is counting on a win in that state to draw much-needed support to his campaign. Confident about winning the Republican nomination following his success, Trump took aim at his likely Democratic opponent. “Frankly, if Hillary Clinton were a man, I don’t think she would get 5 percent of the vote,” Trump said. The former secretary of state, who won 4 of Tuesday’s 5 primaries, chose to respond by embracing the accusation. “If fighting for women’s health care and paid family leave and equal pay is playing the woman card, then deal me in!” she said.
