Essential question
How can political alliances influence presidential elections?
Republicans Ted Cruz and John Kasich announced they will team up in an attempt to block Donald Trump from winning the presidential nomination, drawing an angry response from the front-runner and his supporters.
The candidates’ non-compete agreement has Kasich staying away from Indiana, where Cruz has been campaigning hard for the upcoming May 3 primary. Cruz will leave Oregon and New Mexico to Kasich.
Indiana is a winner-take-all state. Current polls show Trump at 39 percent, Cruz at 33 percent and Kasich at 19 percent. If Kasich backs out, the hope is that Cruz can pick up his voters and vault over Trump’s 39 percent.
At a rally Monday, Trump accused his opponents of colluding against him, saying such a partnership would be illegal in the business world.
“But, in politics, because it’s a rigged system, because it’s a corrupt enterprise, in politics, you’re allowed to collude,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, voters turned out in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island Tuesday for state primary elections. Democrat Bernie Sanders continued campaigning hard, insisting that his campaign still has a chance against Hillary Clinton.
