Wisconsin primary voters face new strict ID laws

DOWNLOAD VIDEO
Essential question
Why is voting an important tool in a democracy?
According to Wisconsin's strict new voter ID law, voters heading to the polls for Tuesday’s primary must have a photo ID. While supporters say the law prevents voter fraud, opponents say that as many as 350,000 otherwise eligible voters could be disenfranchised — most of them poor and people of color. Other changes made by Republican lawmakers include changing the days and hours early voting can take place, according to Executive Director of Milwaukee Election Commission Neil Albrecht. But tougher laws are necessary to prevent voter fraud, said Rick Esenberg, president of Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty. Although the incidents of voter fraud in the U.S. are very low, sixteen states have passed new strict voter ID laws. Some voters have struggled to obtain identification because in order to apply for a state ID, a person needs certain documents, like a passport or a birth certificate, and accessibility to these documents tends to be harder for minorities and low income individuals.
