Essential question
How much do voters value trustworthiness and ethical behavior in a presidential candidate?
On the campaign trail this week, Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and now-official Republican nominee Donald Trump traded accusations as they campaigned throughout the Western United States. A report from the State Department’s inspector general released Wednesday criticized former Secretary of State Clinton’s use of private email during her time in office.  Clinton acknowledged that she didn’t seek approval to set up a private account, but said that the guidelines were not clear when she took office. Trump pounced on Clinton’s emails during campaign stops Wednesday. “As I say, crooked Hillary crooked Hillary, she’s as crooked as they come. She had a little bad news today, as you know, from — some reports came down that weren’t so good.” But Trump also found himself on the defensive. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is popular with the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, accused him of openly celebrating the housing market crash in 2007. “Donald Trump was drooling over the idea of a housing meltdown, because it meant he could buy up a bunch more property on the cheap,” she said in a speech. “I’m a businessman. That’s what I’m supposed to do,” Trump said in response at a rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico Tuesday. That event turned violent when demonstrators threw burning t-shirts and rocks at police and they responded with pepper spray and smoke bombs.
