Essential question
What are the disadvantages and advantages of a long primary season?
Donald Trump officially landed the Republican nomination when a number of North Dakota delegates pledged their support Thursday.
The news means that Trump will no longer face a contested Republican National Convention in July, which happens when no candidate has secured the minimum 1,237 votes needed to secure the nomination.
Trump celebrated the news at a press conference, where he reveled in the fact that his nomination is official before the Democrats.
“And here I am watching Hillary fight, and she can’t close the deal,” Trump said.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders continue to fight for the nomination, both focusing this week on California where the June 7 primary will offer up a large pot of delegates.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama was at the G7 Summit in Japan, where he said many world leaders have raised concern over the prospect of a Trump presidency.
“They’re rattled by him, and for good reason, because a lot of the proposals that he has made display either ignorance of world affairs or a cavalier attitude or an interest in getting tweets and headlines,” Obama said.
Trump dismissed the criticism, saying “if they’re rattled in a friendly way, that’s a good thing.”
