DOWNLOAD VIDEO Directions: Watch the Student Reporting Labs (SRL) video, “ Counselor speaks students' ‘love languages.’" Next, have students take the online quiz to determine their own ‘love language.’ Then, do school counselor’s Edith Porter's love languages activity to brainstorm ways to best receive support and connection from others. Summary: Love Languages are categories of love that people might need and prefer; the five love languages are Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, and Physical Touch. The love languages do not necessarily refer to romantic love! These are categories of love you can receive from friends, teachers, mentors, parents, or a partner. Some people have multiple love languages that they appreciate equally; other people have only one main language they prefer. Activity: Understanding your love language Materials needed: blank sheet of paper, three colored pens/markers- Take the love languages quiz to determine your top love language(s).
- Trace out your hand on a blank sheet of paper. Write each of the love languages on a finger, with your most compatible language being on your thumb and your least favored language on your pinky.
-
Surrounding each finger, write ways you could receive that kind of love/support. For example, if you were brainstorming about “words of affirmation,” you might write, “telling me I did well on a test.”
- While you’re writing different kinds of support you can receive, use one color for ways you need support at home, another color for ways you need support at school and a third color for ways you need support from friends.
- Reflect. Are you surprised to learn what your love language is? Looking at the colors on your paper, what sources of love do you have a lot of ideas for? What colors don’t show up as much?
