Concerns over Switch to Digital TV

Starting soon, by federal mandate, American TV stations will broadcast exclusively with digital signals, meaning that television sets using older, analog signals will no longer work. Television stations currently use both analog and digital signals, but will switch to using only digital in favor of its clearer pictures and better sound quality. Most Americans won't notice a change because they already receive digital signals through their cable box, satellite, or built-in digital receivers. Despite advertisements aimed at publicizing the change, some worry that certain viewers have yet to hear about the move to digital TV. The Senate passed a bill late Monday that would move the digital television transition date to June 12 from Feb. 17. The legislation now moves to the House, where a vote is expected this week. In this report, correspondent Kwame Holman examines the issues and confusion surrounding the nation's change to digital television. Quotes "The public service media, which public broadcasting PBS represents, we are particularly concerned that the American people are receiving a television signal in terms of information, in terms of security, and, in the case of children in particular, so that they have access to educational high-quality programs that they rely on." - Paula Kerger, PBS President "The Hispanic community in this country is much more affected by getting their signal through the air than any other sub-segment of the population. And as the largest Spanish-language media broadcaster in the United States, we've taken particular interest in this." - Joe Uva, CEO, Univision "Digital television will give people unbelievable pictures, better sound quality, more programs and services than ever before." - David Rehr, President, National Association of Broadcasters Warm Up Questions 1.
