Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch of England, celebrated her "Diamond Jubilee" - 60 years as Queen - in four days of celebration in London.
Britain's monarchy has had its ups and downs with the people, facing several years when it was very unpopular because of family scandals and the feeling that a monarchy was no longer necessary. However, since the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton last spring, the public's fervor for the monarchy has increased and massive crowds gathered to celebrate the Queen's 60-year reign.
The celebrations involved military fly-overs, concerts, special meals and several appearances by the Queen in the balcony of Buckingham Palace and in her car heading to the various events. Her husband, Prince Philip, became ill before the Diamond Jubilee began and was unable to attend the events.
