By Jordan Mambert The Great War, also known as World War I, was fought from 1914-1918 between multiple countries on two opposing sides. The Central Powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, while the other side consisted of France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States. President Barack Obama recently recognized two soldiers for their service in the war. Have your class watch the video (above) and answer the following questions in a class discussion. Do you know anyone who is currently serving or has served in the military? What is the "Medal of Honor"? Why is it prestigious to receive one? Why weren't these soldiers originally recognized for their actions? What is the "Purple Heart"? Why might it be important to recognize soldiers who have done brave things even after their death?
