By Gabby Shacknai and Corinne Segal Omar Pérez is a Cuban poet, translator, essayist and the son of the well-known Argentine revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara, whose stylized visage has become a symbol of countercultural rebellion around the world. Show your class this video of his reading his original poem “The Concept” (above) then do one of the following: 1) As a class, make a list of all the verbs in the poem. What do these words have in common? Do any stand out to you as different from the rest of the list? What are their connotations and what ideas do they bring up? How do you think these words influence the overall meaning of the poem? 2) Ask your class to respond individually to the following prompt in writing: Select an image in the poem. What feelings or associations does this image evoke? How does this image relate to Perez’s description of revolution? Use textual evidence in your answer.
