Analyze the work of Juan Felipe Herrera, U.S. poet laureate - Class Activity

Juan Felipe Herrera was named this year's U.S. poet laureate for his long legacy in the world of poetry. Watch NewsHour correspondent Jeff Brown's interview with Herrera with your class (above) and read this selection of Herrera's poems published by The New York Times. Then, give your class the following writing prompt, based on Herrera's poem "Five Directions to My House." Writing prompt Read Herrera's poem "Five Directions to My House." Select one word from each line of the poem (these words do not have to have anything in common; simply select one that stands out to you). Think: what do each of these words do to help create an image in the poem? Then, write your own poem of the same title, modeled on Herrera's poem and using the five words you selected somewhere in your poem. You can keep Herrera's structure of five steps or use another type of form.
