Class discussion: Most memorable moments from the RNC and DNC

This summer, the Republican and Democratic parties met separately to officially nominate their respective candidates for president. Cleveland, Ohio hosted the Republican National Convention from July 18 to 21 and the Democratic National Convention took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from July 25 to 28. Each convention had its share of memorable moments and controversy, but the overall impact on the election is difficult to tell. Watch the video summarizing some of the more notable speakers from both conventions and then discuss the following questions as a class:
  1. Which speakers stuck out to you the most from that video? What was it about who they were, what they said or how they said it that you...
  2. "I'm a Christian, a conservative and a republican, in that order." Mike Pence
  3. "Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it?" Trump
  4. "snap decisions" and "thin skin" Michelle Obama
  5. What was significant about what Bernie Sanders had to say about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton?
  6. Why is significant that former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg chose to speak at the DNC?
Extension Activity: Watch these two videos produced by student reporters at the RNC and DNC to find out what other young people had to say about this year's election, then discuss the role of young voters in politics as a class.
