Fun Facts About Presidential Candidates

Hillary Clinton:
  • As a young child, Hillary wrote a letter to NASA inquiring about how she could become an astronaut. NASA wrote back and said that girls could not be astronauts.
  • Hillary was an active Republican as a young adult and campaigned for Barry Goldwater. However, she eventually left the Republican Party due to the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement and her tenure at Wellesley College.
  • She carries hot sauce in her purse.
  • During the summer of 1969, she worked in Alaska in a factory gutting and canning salmon.
  • She traveled to 112 countries while Secretary of State, making her the most well-traveled Secretary of State until John Kerry broke her record.
  • She has a one-year-old granddaughter and is expecting another grandchild this summer.
Bernie Sanders:

  • He attended the March on Washington in 1963. He was also arrested in Chicago at a civil rights demonstration.

  • He has his own Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor called Bernie’s Yearning, which consists of a thin chocolate layer on top of plain mint ice cream. The chocolate disk represents the top one percent of Americans who hold vast quantities of economic wealth and the mint ice cream represents the rest of the population.
  • He lost his high school presidential election, earning the fewest votes out of three candidates.
Donald Trump
  • Trump is germophobic and dislikes shaking hands.
  • He owned the New Jersey Generals football team in 1983 before it folded.
  • Trump claims that he is self-funding his candidacy.
  • His campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” is very similar to a slogan of Ronald Reagan, “Let’s Make America Great Again.” He applied to trademark the slogan almost immediately after the beginning of Obama’s second term.
  • Trump owns a total of 15 golf courses located in the United States and around the world.
  • He hosted the reality TV show The Apprentice for 14 seasons and stopped in 2015 because of his presidential campaign.
