Daily News Story: Comey hearing outcome

  • Former FBI Director James Comey testified in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8, and his testimony revealed new information about the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The Republicans and Democrats showed differing approaches to the controversy.
  • Democrats’ questions focused on the behavior of Trump and his associates, while Republicans’ questions focused on Comey’s behavior, casting doubt on his actions and statements going back to the FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails.
  • According to Comey’s memo and written testimony, Trump told him that he “hoped” that Comey would drop the investigation against Flynn. During questioning, Republican Sen. James Risch argued that the word “hope” did not constitute an order, even though Comey said, “I took it as direction.” Because the debate on obstruction of justice depends on Trump’s conversations with Comey, details of every word matter.
  • Comey made it clear that he thinks that the president cannot be relied on to tell the truth. While he felt the need to document every detail of his interactions with Trump due to “the nature of the person,” he did not feel the need to do so with President Bush and President Obama.

  1. Essential question: Why is James Comey’s testimony important?
  2. What is obstruction of justice? Why is it a serious crime for a sitting president to commit?
  3. Why was Comey unable to answer some questions in an open hearing?
  4. How did the questions asked by Democrats and Republicans differ? Why do you think members of the Senate Intelligence Committee from opposing parties asked different questions?
  5. What do you think might happen next in this investigation?
