‘Nuclear option’ sees first result as judicial nominee confirmed by Senate

Still by PBS NewsHour

The Senate confirmed a judicial nominee Tuesday in the first enforcement of the new “nuclear option” rules eliminating filibusters on presidential nominees.

Senate Democrats, in a 56-38 vote, pushed forth a confirmation of Patricia Millett to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, filling a seat that had been vacant since 2005. Before the rules change that was passed on November 21, Millett’s nomination had been previously blocked in October by Senate Republicans, preventing her from receiving the previously required 60 votes to proceed.
