Salvador Allende (pictured right, with Fidel Castro on the left) is elected president. He forms a leftist coalition and focuses on reducing rampant inflation and spurring economic growth.

His government quickly socializes most of the country's industries and the economy sees short-term improvements. But different factions within Allende's coalition begin to fight one another.
